S-Class Hybrid S 550 Plug-In, any good?
What do you think about a 2016 S-Class Hybrid S 550 Plug-In HYBRID with 72,000 Miles?
Does it have any real power with the V6 Cylinder Engine? is it a double headache car?
I had a BMW 530e plug in hybrid and many times had to go to service which was under warranty for various hybrid issues and not sure if Mercedes Benz is any better.

Sam,
I sent you a private message regarding the S550e Plug-In Hyrbid. I find that this car has plenty of power and the battery gives it extra 'oomph' when punching it. I drove both models and didn't notice a difference. It has 436hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, which is very close to the V8 counterpart. It is not a double headache car and I am really enjoying the MPG I am getting out of a 5,500lb sedan.

I was wondering about that. The W221's hybrids were a disaster in that regard. The failed batteries rendered the cars virtually worthless and nobody in their right mind would touch a used one as a result.

I love mine bought in 2019 and no regrets. FYI with a battery this small it is likely to last 20 years. Mine has lost no range since I bought the car and the car has plenty of power!! I get around 30-33 on long trips with no ability to recharge and I get anywhere between 35 to 50 on shorter trips when I can leave both locations with full battery. I commute about 28 miles each way to work and leave with a full battery in each direction so usually 50 MPG. The elecctric only is limited in reality to 12-14 but I use only electric often when I run to the supermarket or drug store which is 9 to 12 miles roundtrip, I only charge when power is cheap so essentially it is close to free for that.

I had a PHEV BMW 5-series and it was one of the best cars we ever owned service wise. It is one of only a couple vehicles I owned for years that never ever went in for service even once, all the way up to 78K miles!. I would not listen to all the noise that is not backed up by first hand experience. PHEV cars have small batteries that by design and in theory can easily last 15 years or more. I also owned an accord that lasted longer than that. My BMW PHEV consistently delivered the claimed range even after 78K miles. I considered the S560 PHEV. If you are planning to not keep the car for more than 10 years, I don’t see why u need to be worried. The batteries and electric systems on PHEV is covered by the federal government required warranty of 8-years/100,000-mile warranty (same for all EV batteries). CA mandates a warranty of 10 years or 150K miles. Right now I am considering a W223 PHEV. If you don’t mind the 6-cylinder engine and don’t really want the fun of a V8, I think the PHEV W222 is an excellent option.

If you travel, you might consider the 550e of that year has a 16.3 gas tank vs a normal S550k that has a 21.1 fuel tank. Can't go as far in the 550e is what i"m saying.

I wasn't able to get a clear answer on this, but I read that the hybrid portion of the vehicle has a separate warranty that can change depending on the location of where it was originally sold. For example, I found a unit for sale that was originally sold in CA and the warranty was 10 years/150k miles and did not specify that it was limited to the first owner. Anyone familiar with this?

You can always call your local MB dealership just to be certain. I just bought a non CPO car a couple months ago. One minor issue was covered by my local dealership becasue the car was under mileage, even thought technically a few months past warranty coverage. No guarantee of the same for you. But always best to have some type of relationship with your local MB dealer.

Oh well. I stand corrected. I never looked to see the 'e' was a six banger. Not much range whatsoever on that 'e' as in 14 miles.
I owned '14 Panamera SE-Hybrid that supposedly go 14 miles of range.. But I soon found out driving it on a Sunday morning at 7am with virtually no traffic and doing 45-50 miles per hr It only got around 13 miles. Was a two year old car though. No idea how the first driver treated the batt.
Kyle Connor on YouTube got 59 miles on a GLE 450e driving at 70 mph till the batt switched over to gasoline.

The range on this car is OUTSTANDING. I typically get 500+ miles on a tank, for long distrance travel I get a solid 450. Intersate 5 with climbs out of Bay Area and climb into LA with 80-90 MPH the whole way I never stop for gas. The car was ever intended to be a full time electric car and they have made some good improvements on it since 2016 but as I stated I use it to go to drug store/grocery all the time with full electric.

How's the brake feel on a 550e? Just read a report on the new 580e and they complained it had some of the same mushiness as the new BEV models ..

Never even thought about it, I am very used to driving the car and I don't "drag" the brakes like I would in my full EV, first off Nissan Leaf Brakes last forever and second they are cheap to replace. I would rather use a little more gas. But that said they are solid and the car can stop as well as the 2015-16 regular S550's I test drove.
