At the risk of sounding like an idiot, can I put 20” rims & tires on my W222 4Matic that currently has standard 18” rims? I dislike the standard and my W221 had Sport Plus One AMG 20” wheels. I have run flat 18’s on now, much quieter than the 20” but I just hate the rims. I would like to put 20” AMG multi-spoke rims and appropriate 20” tires. It’s a shame the original owner didn’t opt to upgrade the wheels - because this one has the executive rear seat package plus and was almost fully optioned at $135k. Anything I need to worry about if I put 20” on? If I keep the 18” tire size and find 18” rims I like, Is there a particular lug pattern I need to pay attention to? thanks in advance. You can absolutely install 20 inch wheels in addition you may utilize the s550 tire sizes or the s63 tire sizes. The easiest way to go about it would be to shop around locally or on the forums here for a set of pre-owned oem ones that way you dont have to think too much about offset.
You will probaby start to hear from the folks on this board that try to down-size not upsize their rims. If you live in an area with very smooth roads than 20's may be good, for me i have 19's and that I think is the best compromise size. I still love the way bigger rims look on the S but the off-set is tough ride and wheels getting cracked by bad roads. I live in SF Bay Area and my roads suck so many pot holes and the first S I found had 22's (afermarket AMG look-alikes) but the car was from Phoenix where freeways are amazing. I lost that car and when I found mine with 19's AMG I thought and believe it is perfect blend of size (not too small) but not big enough for a rough ride. Just find OEM or OEM look-alikes which can be just as good. The one thing you'll have to decide is if you want a staggered set which I think will be the default. That is also a debate, personally I will sacrifce the ability to rotate for the mean look of those 275's out back. Stock is 245 front and 275 back but many run 255 and 285's, I may be wrong but I think staggered is the only thing you will find in 19 and 20's and maybe people pitch those out for 18" and run 255 all around so they can rotate.
My last w222 had 20's and 3 of the 4 rims cracked, one to the point of being replaced ($900), I live in Atlanta and we have what I consider good roads ('twas a local car), but it had some wheel history. My recent purchase also has 20s, I would have preferred 19s, but that's what it came with, and this time around I did spend a fortune on the wheel and tire coverage that Mercedes offer. In speaking with my service advisor, he said that they are getting to the point of not even repairing wheels any more (and I think that he shoots pretty straight).

When I ordered my current '18 S560, I didn't s[end three seconds looking at wheel choices. Anyone who has read my earlier posts probably understands those kinds of issues simply are not important to me, and, I'm pretty sure, to many other owners, especially older ones.

To OP, yes, shouldn't be an issue to go larger on wheels. The bolt pattern is 5x112 if I recall. Let us know what you end up getting Back when I had a W222 I went larger and got some HRE's.....which are still out in my barn LOL........where they have been sitting since 2018

I've noticed that I can't see my wheels from the driver's seat. Seems a bit vain to spend $5K for a set of wheels so that others can look them (lol).
I bought the tire and rim protection on this car and the W221 I had prior. I decided I wanted the peace of mind to get them repaired for free rather than irritated if my wife nicked the curb. Also, I was commuting quite a bit in Washington DC traffic and potholes appear out of nowhere. I got good use out of the protection on the 221, so bought it again. This time, it was unlimited fixes for about the same price vs two per wheel
or something previously. Between bent rims and curb rash it was a good value. The 222 I’ve done nothing to any wheel, but interestingly I took it in for some extremely minor pre existing mark - figured why not it is free - they fixed that and I learned of another rim that was bent - so glad I’ve had it even though it was like $2k or
something. It will protect the new wheels also.
I found some non MB replicas @18” that are the same design as the 20” multispokes. They offer staggered and non staggered - I’ve had staggered before and think I’ll just go with the non staggered to get a little more life out of them. I rarely drive this car and the ride quality and noise on the 18”s make me want to keep them. Surprisingly these are Bridgestone Turanza’s - I usually buy Michelin Pilot Sports, but these are actually equally as quiet and have decent ride quality. Every once in a while I reminded on a curve at higher speeds that I don’t have 20’s.. haha. Seems like the reviews on these non MB are decent and I’ve heard some decent remarks from folks on here about some of the replicas … my neighbor was a MB master tech and bought some replicas for his 08 E Class that have been decent to him.
I didn’t realize I attached the wrong photo! Here is a view of the original rims the day I bought the car. The wheels I prefer the style of are the 20” AMG multispoke - second row, center. The ones on now are first row, left pic. They look similar to the AMG 5 spoke but don’t have sharp crisp lines.
And hey, to each his own on preference and how money is spent… I just don’t love the original rims. When I love everything else about the car, it detracts when I look at the rims so why not fix it!

MB has always had pretty abysmal wheel choices. I do realize that not everyone cares what kind of wheels are on a car but for me I always had to have AM wheels

badq45t - to be clear, you have the AMG 10 spoke 19”? Do you have them a S550 or S63? Just curious if you changed them out on your own since they appear to have been only a S63 option - since I’m thinking of doing something on the same lines. I like those too! My first thought is because my 18” tires are only a few thousand miles old, and I’m only driving 5k a year, that I’m going to try and stick with 18” and get some decently reviewed replicas that are mult spoke - either like the ones you mention or the similar ones in row 2, #2.
my neighbor has row 3, #1 on his E-class and they look great. He decided on replicas due to the price and has been happy. As a former MB master tech he usually won’t budge off genuine MB down to the light bulbs. Since he has had some good success, I’m think it’s a less expensive option to get something I like a bit more. First world problems when you’re debating things like this I know. Even with the rims I don’t love, there’s nothing else to dislike about this car. It’s my second S Class and my 5th MB. I’m so glad I transitioned from an E Class to an S class. I tell people all the time, there’s no comparison driving a MB to other cars, and then there’s no comparison driving a S Class when compared to other MB models. The difference between an A Class and S Class are mind boggling. My daughter’s 13 y/o GLK rides nicer than most new cars built by other manufacturers. We had a CLK cabriolet that she had had a few fender benders in as a young driver, and despite that it still drove like a dream. So when I factor all that into my brain I realize the rim conversation really doesn’t matter. 😁

hyperion - they really do make a big difference in how the car looks. I loved the 20” AMG wheels I had on my W221. Here’s a pic. I regret not keeping it, zero mechanical issues to 150k when I got the W222 except maintenance. It was an awesome car.
They look great Will! I have to admit, I liked the standard 18” rims from 2015 better than what they converted to in ‘16 that I have. They should’ve just left those as is but to each his/her own. You made a great choice!

I'm still amazed at how so many of us S Class owners are really deep into wheels. and
I still can't see how it matters.

I was just posting what mine came with, I have put new wheels and tires on Jeeps in the past, but on my Mercedes, I am more concerned about the toys on the inside, but nice wheels do make a car look great when you are walking up to it.
Agree on the niceties inside, happy with that! I am only sad that no one in my house will drive it but me, so I’ve never been able to enjoy those first class rear seats!
