Engine replacement
Engine replacement
So i have a chance to purchase a 2017 S 550 at auction tommarrow. States it doesnt run and has a mechanical issue. Car only has about 50k miles on it. Any ideas what a engine swap would cost me?

Call some local indy MB shops, the stealership I would think would be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth it, but unless someone ran it out of oil I don't see why the whole engine would need to be swapped. that said it would be a major gamble!

People do like to tune things and the 550 is not prepped like a 63 so a broken rods and block can't be discarded.
It this what you do? Because otherwise this is a horrible way to get into a Dime a dozen S550

Could be flooded or cracked block.
Look at eBay prices for salvage engines, and add 50%-100% for labor and ancillary parts.
M157 and M278 are known for bore scoring, I wouldn’t do this project. Maybe with a M17x.

I don’t know what the cost would be in $$. I do know that project would be a major headache. I agree with member VII that there are many better examples of S550 for sale. Look around & you will see them. Good luck.
Engine alone should cost at least $ 10K . I would not buy a car in that condition . Floor damage could also cause major havoc in electrical systems and W222 is not a carburated 50's American makes

You would be crazy to not get a second opinion from a trusted indi MB shop in your area. I have never seen a more incompetent and clueless platform than a MB dealership. I’ve been lied to many times, proven by my own indi. How does piston friction tick? They’re moving so fast that a tick would be more of a consistent, grinding noise I would think. There are solenoids on this engine that do tick. I’m sorry, but if you don’t get a second opinion outside of the dealership, then you’re crazy!
The dealerships are the core reason why I’m done with the brand overall. Once our GLS starts acting up, it’s gone. Sooo many stories I could tell you about truly horrible experiences I’ve had with 4 dealers on two MB’s. In fact, I got a random text just today from the dealership saying ours has a safety recall outstanding on it and when should they schedule the visit to fix it. I told them I’d rather have the open recall than the 3 other problems you will cause in trying to fix it. NEVER have they fixed a problem without causing two more since 2017. Not. One. Time.
i can promise you, that dealership hopes you don’t check their work. Also keep in mind that many are in revenue generation mode now with tariff and recession fear in the economy. Don’t be a sucker to a MB dealership. Take it to an indi for verification.

Further…ours had a noise on the blower motor for the AC. It was a piece of plastic cover debris from the factory. Took 20 minutes to get to the blower motor fan and remove the piece of plastic. I seriously doubt replacing the blower fan is a $10,000 job.

Year old thread, never heard back from OP. Pretty sure he didn't go through with the original idea. Dead thread.
