TRANSMISSION SHIFTING

Battery was disconnected during body work , resulting in erratic shifting when returning to service. Specifically. fifth gear was reached only after exceeding 60 mph. After operating the car for fifteen minutes, the shifting pattern returned to normal...2,3,4,5,6,7.

Was this due to the computer recognizing the return to standard driving, after being interrupted during battery pause ?

Yeah, that should be normal. The transmission shift points got cleared I assume and the car needed a few 10s of miles to learn and adapt again it's shift points. Several members here experienced some rough shifting behavior at some point and one trick is to reset the transmission shift points memory by unplugging the battery (it only helps for a few 100s of miles though). In your case it sounds like that's what happened, except that you didn't really need to re-adapt your transmission shift points.
