recommended obd-II scanner for 2020 S560

Just bought 2020 S560 from NY MB dealer last weekend with 4 months original factory, 1 year CPO and 2 years extended warranty. Car has just had its B service and has 26,000 miles. I just took in for VIN verification and emissions testing at a CT inspection station, no issues.

Took it for our first drive and no issues for the first hour. Parked at a restaurant, came out, started the car and the yellow check engine light is on. Removed and retightened gap cap, no change. Drove it for a few minutes, stopped and restarted , no change, yellow warning light still on.

Obviously, very depressing way to get started with this car.

Before I take the time to get an appointment and take it to a MB dealer, I think I should get a scanner and see if I can get some more information for this problem and future problems. Any recommendations for a scanner that will provide the correct code/diagnostics and the proper hookup for a 2020 MB S560? Obviously, I don't need professional quality, it may only be used 3-4 times but I don't want a piece of junk.

Another question, can a MB dealer remotely view the diagnostic codes associated with the check engine light?

Larry

I know some on here has had good experience with iCarsoft MB scanners. I myself has used Foxwell scanners, midgrade to professional ones, all will give you the reading and some googling you'll find out what the issue is.

Take it to an auto parts store and have them read the code.

I have several OBDII scanners and my favorite is the Launch Elite 2.0 MB -- about $160 at Amazon after discount coupon (
Amazon Amazon
).

Thanks for the information. I decided that I would like to be able to look at and clear codes myself so I just bought the Launch Elite 2.0 MB on Amazon.

Amazing that it just went through a B service, just went through CT emissions testing ( emissions is a frequent generator of check engine lights), I never removed the gas cap before, 30 minutes of driving with no errors, and then stop , eat and restart and I get a check engine light. I was supposed to use the car for a vacation this week. I guess I should be glad that I was not 100 miles away on vacation when the check engine came on.

I would think that, with all the wireless technology, a MB dealer should be able to remotely check and clear codes. Probably not something they want to do but to have a car buyer have a check engine light after only 30 minutes of driving after purchase and a B service is certainly not something that inspires confidence in the brand.

Nothing in a B service should trigger a CEL. You might check the oil fill cap and make sure it's seated. Remote code reading is certainly within the realm of technology, but dealers make money charging you to connect their code scanner. Car manufacturers strongly dislike owners having the ability to connect scanners and read codes. There's plenty of computing power in any car to display DTCs on the nav screen, but this is like giving away money.

I run OBD scans about once a month because not every fault condition will trigger the CEL. I think you'll find the scanner a useful tool that you'll use more than you expect.

Thanks

Thanks, i will check the oil fill cap.

i thought the selling dealer might do a remote read as a courtesy. I just bought the car from them and within the first 20 miles, and their B service, i get a check engine light. Car was delivered to me by enclosed carrier. Selling dealer is about 2-2.5 hours away. I would probably go to a more local mb dealer to check it out.

just also went through CT emissions and passed. I wonder if the emissions people messed up something, although i dont think they do anything except hook up to the port.

Not sure about CT, but in CO the emissions testing includes verifying the gas cap seal, so it should be OK if CT tests them too.
