Talking Time to upgrade?

Hello W222 people,

Currently I own a 2012 W221, and I'm looking to upgrade to the W222, at least a 2018 model or newer. If there are any threads about the this generation V8 Biturbo that you think I should see please let me know.

Im ready for some more tech & the W222 seems like the right upgrade. What are y'all's experiences & opinion on this generation? Better or worse?

Thanks!!

At this point it’s just about technology…. The newest W221 is an 11 years old car (and the design is >18 years old). The newest W222 is 4 years old (design is >10 years old). Both are technically not that new design-wise now, but you’ll notice much better technology with the W222 (especially with the 2018+ facelift). Don’t expect a more muscular car though. To me, build quality and materials is very close (I wouldn’t say that either of them is that much better than the other, so just keep your expectations reasonable and you’ll be happy).

I’d try to get a 2019 instead of 2018 … at least you will receive OTA updates. Don't even try. Though mostly they map updates, but 2019+ also received some OTA bug fixes/improvements (I know of at least least 2 recalls OTA for the communication module), etc that the 2018 will never get unless a dealer does that manually. One undocumented change is the door weather stripping; there were a few who reported that early 2018s had some issue that was addressed in 2019 and reduce wind noise.

W222 is my fave S Class ever but I love W221s as well. W222 is more modern and definitely feels a newer car when you sit in

Yes, definitely a 222, 2018 up. Preferably a 2019 so the car meets your budget and uses the newer APP. The old Brace app I have the feeling is not too much longer for the world. The 2019 would use the mercedes Me connect app which will be around for a while longer. Other than that not much difference from the 2018 to the 2020. I have no desire to get a 2021 and up S580. The cars just don't appeal to me and really like the MBC my current car is equipped with.

Ya good idea on recommending 2019 as mBrace is likely based on 3G which is sunset now... or very shortly.

Yeah.. am very happy with the Mercedes Me app. I added shortcuts, and I can lock or unlock the car and it responds literally within less than a second.. almost feels instantaneous as a phone key. The ability to see if Windows are opened, washer fluids status, tires air-pressure, and some other live metrics, is also exclusive to the MB Me app on 2019s and up. The car also sends reminders within 1 minute if you leave the doors unlocks and reminds you to lock them. Also from what I noticed, Mercedes Me app renewal is much easier and the app is better managed with higher tier customer service than what you get with Mbrace in 2018s and older. I had cars with both so just sharing what I experienced.

Thank you all for your input - I'm just finishing up some research on the M176 V8 and it seems to be quite reliable. I may be moving to this W222 forum soon......

Curious about how much the Mercedes Me costs per month? Annually?

Thanks!

I think that I paid $150 for a year, last time I had to buy it, and it was a single price for everything. Previously, I had been able to just purchase some functions, for a lower price.

I had a 2012 S63 and moved up in 2018 to a 2018 S63. I will never, ever sell this car, it's that good. The new ones look like a stretched honda to me on the exterior. These cars... have presence.

Very nice looking car. Great choice. I love my 2018. I also have a 2019 E450 and the App on the 2019 is much better although the 2018's is useable, I do subscribe to the Monthly plan for the remote start and doors lock and unlock and it works alright, but it's much better having the feedback with the app that the 2019 gives you. I just hit 75K miles with my car and it's running strong still. I'm hopeful of getting 200K out of the car, one of the best cars I've owned.

Little update! So I'm coming up on owning my W222 for a whole year now, I may have added just under 19k miles to it. Safe to say I like the car,

Overall I've had ZERO issues, which is very refreshing as my last cars needed constant attention. But with oil changes every 5k miles and on time service this 2019 has been a happy camper. I really don't see myself getting the W223, I don't dislike it, but its not a W222! The new MB app is defiantly worth it to find a 2019, incase anyone is in the market for a Benz. I do pay for it yearly I think (~$150) and use the auto start almost daily. Compared to my W221, which I put just about 50k miles on, the ride in the W222 is a shocking about better, seriously. The cabin quietness is similar, but just less wind noise. Overall I'm super happy with the car, the looks, the drive, and for a big boat this thing is actually quite fast, and its only a 560...

Thanks again to everyone who responded to the thread, I appreciate your help!

I will say that having had both, I don't miss the W222. The 223 is overall a better car.

Too bad Mercedes makes such darn good cars! No doubt the 223 has an immense amount more of tech, and I agree the ride and cabin noise are quieter. But the 222 is the 222.......

How many times have you been at the dealer for problems with your 223 versus the 222....in the first year of ownership ?
