When checking the engine oil level via the onboard computer, the manual states:

Checking the engine oil level using the on board computer Requirements: The engine has warmed up. The vehicle is parked on a level surface. The engine is running at idle speed.

This goes against everything I have learned.

 

Well, the way the sensor works in this engine is that it measures the oil at idling speed. That is how the sensor is designed to function. It is not the physical dipstick method that requires engine off and engine oil settle to the pan.

I wonder who at MB decided that burying the oil level display several layers down was a better idea than displaying it fulltime on the more than large enough instrument screen. My guesses are (a) some software engineer in Bangalore who never drove a car, or (b) some geek addicted to fingering a smartphone. Clearly they're both dipsticks.
