Misfire on Cyl 4

Hi All,
my 2019 s560 (4.0tt) got a misfire on cyl 4.
car has 91k on it.
started it up to leave the office and it sounded like an AMG.
Shook very badly when I gave it gas (load)

drove it home (very light on the pedal)
Shut the car off for a while, no misfire.
ran xentry, cleared codes.

Took the car out again, no misfire.
it has also been under 10dg here for the last week….
where do I start my diagnosis?

A weak coil pack could start to be flaky in cold weather.. if you’ve not replaced them with 91,000 miles, it’s definitely time to do those and the plugs, and you can boroscope the cylinders while you’re in there. You can look at injectors in xentry, but if you’ve never run any Techron or redline through it, it’s probably a good idea too.

thank you.
i did the plugs at 50k and was planning on doing them in the next month.

i run bg44k every 6 or so months.
I also try to fill up with sunoco 94.
tuned with Renntech (over 2 years with the tune)

Here is the readout from xentry
thanks for the feedback.

Sounds like a bad coil. I have had 2 coils go on my S560. Took some time to each to fail. They behaved just like yours. You don’t want to wait. When one of mine failed completely, the ride to the Indy shop was not fun. Temperature didn’t seem to matter for me in Florida.

I’m betting it’s a coil on it’s way out.

Ww suffered the same issue (intermittent misfire for about a week before total failure) in our W212.

Best to change all of them, as the others will likely be failing at intervals going forward.

Yeah +1 on the coils. I had my #7 fail and it took several instances of the misfire for it to actually store a code! Finally got the Check Engine light and the resulting code.

*ALSO: If I stopped and turned the engine off and waited 30 seconds it would start and drive like nothing was wrong, until it happened again. No problems in 15k miles since changing all the coils.

Stick with OEM plugs, which I believe are Bosch.

Inspect the plugs individually and control the electrode gap without stressing center pin.

I'm going to do mine next week, hope there's no oil on any of them! BTW, did you have to disconnect and take out a high pressure fuel line on the left side? That's mentioned in a video I watched on doing plugs on the 4.0 liter engine ...

im at 91k, gaskets are due soon but Im surprised at the oil on the threads.
You have to disconnect the battery so the fuel pump is not running, and then disconnect the fuel line on the left.
You cant get the coil out with the fuel line in place.

also on right side, in the back there is another t25 that you have to take off to remove some silver tube to get at that coil.
i had 2 stuck boots….one of them took almost an hour of pulling on to get it out.
all other bolts are 10 and t30.
torque plugs to 23nm.

Speaking of oil forced out to leak where possible:
Have you check CPS for oil??

I think i overfilled by .5l, so maybe thats my issue.
only 2 plugs (cyl 2/3) had oil on the threads.

CPS... $10k oil leak

yes, camshaft sensors located on engine top at the front... frequently leak oil into whole engine harness ($10k repair).

Easily inspected by unplugging connector while ECU is asleep to prevent fault code.

Have seen that discussed for the M278 engine, does it affect the M176 also?

I dont think so, that seems to be a wiring harness.
this motor 176 does not have it.
also get yourself a radio removal tool in case a rubber boot breaks away from the coil pack when you are pulling it up.
Dielectric grease on spark plug tips are a must.
