Engine Oil level

The oil gauge shows that the oil level is at 2 bars and that oil level is"OK." Should I top off or wait for the "Add Oil" notification?

Make sure to measure at a leveled surface, it is ideal if the oil level is closer to max but not above it. The operator's manual does say recommended level is between min and max.

Thats perfect. If you add to much it will complain. On my wife's car if I get the oil level almost at max and she drives over rougher streets it will alert her that the oil level is too high.

You can see the actual oil level. Follow these instructions to get to that menu.

I agree, right in between give or take is the sweet spot. I had it filled to the max line at one change, whenever it was going up hill, bumped around, or at higher altitude the pain in the *** warning would pop up. I didn't think altitude affected oil volume but I suppose the air in the closed system did something.

Amazing how a car manufacturer was able to change a metal stick with two score marks labeled "ADD" and "FULL" into a color computer graphic whose interpretation is completely non-intuitive and ambiguous. I wonder why the speedometer isn't a horizontal bar graph labeled "SLOW" and "FAST".

Exactly why I like having the old fashioned dipstick in my M278.

Interesting ... am I the only one who misses looking at the oil on the dipstick when I check the level? That lovely amber tone of fresh oil ...

You are not the only one, oil dipstick is and still the way to go for accurate and painless measuring.

Get a dipstick

I made my own dipstick for just that purpose. The tube is there with a cap that looks like a dipstick but it's just a cap without the stick. MB has a part number for an actual dipstick if you want to order one. I believe they are intended to be used by the service techs but anyone can order one. If you're frugal like me, you can just use a clean flexible wire/cable and put an identifying mark to show the proper level when filled with the correct amount of oil.

My '19 G550 lacks both a dipstick and tube, and after last changing the oil and resetting the service interval, the oil level graphic is no longer available (someone said this is a known bug). The oil measurement in the Workshop menu however is still present.

My X7 still has a dipstick, although it is disguised, lacking the expected yellow pull ring. But the tip of the dipstick is not the long trusted and easy to read flat metal blade. Rather it's a goofy looking red tooled knob on which fresh oil is invisible. What does it mean when car manufacturers employ design engineers assigned to fix things that aren't broken, and break things so they no longer work?

Interesting, I thought bmw started the no dipstick trend a long time ago. I am surprised they brought it back disguised or not.

The color of the oil wiped off the dip stick is indicative of the state of the oil and life remaining.
