Another Dash Peel

Any ideas on repairing/replacing this? Can the top section be replaced separately?

I believe it can. Look at the videos of dash removal on YouTube.

Do you think rubber cement or leather glue would work just as well?

Mercedes stocks dashboards with spanking new leather in Fontana.

Not that hard to replace.

If you want to spend $2-3k a replacement awaits. I would take it to an upholstery shop, they would fix this in 20 minutes.

Fixing it isn't particularly difficult. The difficulty is getting in there along the bottom edge of the windshield without removing the windshield. In my case; the car has one corner along the front edge slightly lifting, but there's less than an inch of space to get in there with anything. The area is so tight that nobody can see it from inside the car, it's only visible when looking from the outside. I've left it alone since it hasn't gotten any worse in the last 2+ years. When I needed my windshield replaced I couldn't find anybody who had the ability to calibrate the windshield in the field so I had to take it in for replacement. That would have been my chance to fix the dash.

Sun is the enemy for sure, I have my baby in a garage and when parked out in the sun I have a great fitting AMG sunshade that goes all the way into the crease to keep that sun off the dash. I lived in Phoenix for 3 years and got my introduction to protecting leather from the sun!!

Saw a fairly new Bentley Flying Spur the other day with a completely puffed up dash cover. Shame

Update: Every shop I've been to say the same thing.......will need to replace the dashboard. On line search shows part # 222-680-42-87-xxx, with xxx depicts color code. My vehicle has trim code 561 Exclusive Black Leather. Would 9E38 be the proper color code? TIA.

You could use contact or other adhesive with weights applied to re-glue the leather down but it is a difficult area to work on without removing the windshield. You could ask a glass shop how much to remove and re-install the glass?

Use a high quality $75+ USD custom fitting sunshade at all times outdoors. Even in the winter. So far they have worked for our previous and current Benz vehicles with leather dashes. I don't understand why folks pay so much for a vehicle and don't simply protect a very expensive and critically viewed area like a leather dash panel that's known to peel. I guess it takes extra work to deploy & store

Also keep the leather conditioned properly with a quality leather conditioner so it doesn't dry out and shrink so much. I believe that to be the root cause of the peel accelerated by heat and UV rays.

I used to have a Porsche 928 and their leather dash covers were notorious for peeling up. Fortunately my car didn't have that option but probably half the guys who did experienced this problem. The remedy for that car was also to remove the dash and re-glue and it was a very involved and expensive job just like on our cars.

I have been down that road...my shop, it was a 7 out of 10 from day one....not six months later worse than ever. It is hard to find someone who cares as much as we do....

You could also have your windshield tinted to keep UV rays off the dash
