MB has released a podcast about the new MBUX, I don't think I'll be listening to it myself but in case anyone is interested...link.

Doesn't look all that different from the current car on the outside. Which is interesting given that it is on a whole new chassis. The W222 looked a lot different (better in my opinion) than the the W221 but was on the same chassis. With the radical departure inside the car, it looks like they wanted to maintain some level of continuity.

Plus, maybe they figured that with the EQS coming, they might keep the S more conservative, while offering the EQS for customers that want something much more differentiated from the W222.

These latest pics look a whole lot better then some of these earlier reveals on the junkyard and I don't mind the look. As mentioned, this is externally more like a facelift which works for me as I think the W222 has been the best looking and classy S-Class to-date.
I like it and hope that the EQS on the other side will as close as possible to the EQS Vision.

Totally agree. My fear though is that it could end up looking more like a CLS than the Vision.

Why does Mercedes keep flipping the grilles upside down? Even on the new amg gt black series it is flipped.

Great observation. So I have frustrated by how the star on hood has been sinking from the drivers view over the years. The only thing I can think of is that it has to do with pedestrian safety and aerodynamics.

Pedestrian Safety has a significant impact on the design and aerodynamics (drag coefficient). Obviously this is key for fuel economy (even more important for EV's).
For the curious here is a quick run down of how S-Class models have improved. W116 @0.412, W126 @0.359, W140 @0.30, W220 @0.27, W221 @0.26 , W222 @0.24

Latest Mercedes production cars are at 0.22 (I think). The Model 3 is a bit more slippery at 0.21 but not good lookin for that reason...

Where I really noticed it for the first time was on the W203. I could only see the top 2/3 of the star from the drivers seat. Same is true for my W212. The S's have been better in this regard.

We just picked up a 2019 E450 wagon and we see maybe only 1/3rd of the star from the driver’s seat. For 2021, the E Class in the USA will no longer be available with the traditional or “Luxury” trim grill. It will still be produced and available in Germany and other markets, but not in here, which I feel is a shame. IMO, that little star should be sitting in a position where the entire emblem is visible by the driver, on every MB, other than the sporting cars.

I am in full agreement. I have spent many a mile in years gone by, seeing not only the whole star standing proud but the simulated radiator cap, all the while feeling very connected to the craftsmen that made the car.

Nice wagon by the way.

Seems to me that some of the complaints about star "visibility" would be due to the shape of the hood. The only way to counter that would be to make the "stalk" part of the ornament taller, which imo might not be such a pretty look.

That would be like Grace Kelly—or some other, gorgeous, classy woman—wearing these shoes.

The story behind finding this wagon is crazy. Should anyone be interested, search “fairy tale” and look under the W213 Forum.

That was implicit in the points about pedestrian safety and aerodynamics. Agree on the impact of the remedy and the size of the star would be out of proportion with height of the grill.

It is quite obvious that MB is doing pretty much everything it can to do away with the traditional “star” hood ornament. I believe that they think it old and out of style, much as they think of their older customers. I sometimes get the idea that they would just prefer it if anyone over 65 bought a Toyota! As much as I love their vehicles, one of these days, I just may give them their wish. If that little star ever leaves the hood of the S Class, I’m definitely outta here. Yeah. It means THAT much to me.

Off topic but I remember getting a Jaguar XJ12 Coupe and in Germany the Jaguar hood figure was illegal due to potential injury to pedestrians.

I remember that. I think it was because the leaping Jaguar didn't collapse like MB star. Jag's was fixed I think.
