Probably optional in Mexico, Germany and most other countries, but what do we bet it’s standard in the USA???

Just another nail in the coffin of tradition! And since dealers heavily favor ordering the ridiculous AMG Line Pkg., you will see very few W223’s with the star sitting on TOP of the hood, where it belongs. I give it until the refresh when the traditional grille/star will disappear forever. You heard it here first.

And that will be that.....

Yeah I just learned that they stopped putting the stars on the hood of the C classes in 2018.

that's not the impression i got from the article. i read it as the 'true' amg (63, 65) will get the centre mounted star in the grille - not those cars with just the amg appearance package. (?)

??? There will be a star on the hood. AMG's have nothing to do the Sport package...

Even so I think the Streamliner has a point, that being every other sedan models have abandoned the star on the hood. The S Class will have a submodel that will put the star in the grill, it would seem like a reasonable projection that it is just a matter of time before the S class loses its star on the hood as well.

A question to you. What is the take rate of the luxury model E Classes in Germany vs US. What I am trying to find out is are Germans abandoning the star on the hood more or less than Americans?

not much new here. but skip to 3m37s (new key design) and 4m00s (demonstration of the door handles popping out - both key activated and proximity-activated).

I understand and agree with many of Streamliners points and frustrations even though our preferences vary quite a bit. IMHO the S-Class will maintain its star on the hood for the traditionalists but that star is an old remnant of a bygone era (the star was originally on the radiator cap on top of the grill and not the hood). But it's not like the star is going away. If anything it is going to be more prominent, just not on the hood. Don't expect any new model to sport an actual upright star on any new model moving forward.

The issue that Stream often complains about are the lack of options available in the US while they are in Germany or other countries. Historically, the US has always very limited model selection but even then the base cars are loaded up (example, you can buy a $150k Mercedes in Germany as still have to order the garage door opener in the mirror as an option. Not included in the base price as in any low-end MB in the US). At the same time, US customers buy the majority of their cars off the showroom floor, opposite that of Germany, so many options are rarely ordered here in the US. That IMO is why the traditional E-Class went away in the US. It's expensive to maintain a parts supply chain for options that are barely purchased.

So is it correct to conclude that the American buyers drove the star off of the hood in the US?

In the US, of course. Or the dealers not offering them (at least for the E Class). I remember when the W213 was launched in the US. If I saw 1 in 100 non-sport line models, that would have been a lot. Probably less than 1%.

But it’s also sign of the times. Sleeker cars will simply not look right with an upright ornament. Even if it’s actually angled

Yes, it was the dealers. You would go to look at E Class sedans and they would have all of them with AMG Pkg. and not a one with the traditional grille. I happen to believe that this was urged on by the factory, by putting extra profit for the dealers in the AMG Packages.

Clearly once Mercedes decided to offer the star in the grill that was what was primarily stocked. I suspect it was demand driven based on following the C and E class boards. For reasons I don't get (probably because of my 60 year history with the marque) people seem to prefer the star in the grill.

My question to Wolfman was, is that a US thing or is the same true in Germany?

The AMG pkg is an additional cost its a whole $650. Lotta profit there!
People simply no longer like the traditional grille and star on the E Class. Anytime we get one it is guaranteed to sit for months.

It’s $5,900.00 on the S Class and all you get are DIFFERENT body panels and DIFFERENT wheels. It is a sensational RIP-OFF, but it makes some S Class drivers think they are “sporty.” Boy, am I going to catch hell for this one!

I ordered mine from the factory with the AMG line because I thought it looked "better", not "more sporty".

Will the 223 have any wood inside? Everything I've seen so far with a few exceptions indicate no wood (or so minimal I'm missing it). Or will it be tied to a luxury package?

It is because the AMG options "DOES" make it more sporty. Remember not everyone is 70 years old and some want a more modern or sporty look and feel. It also adds bigger wheels, valved exhaust, etc. Whats the difference what word you assign to it if in the buyers eye it looks better than the standard model than whats the harm? I would never have bough the standard S as to me it looked cheap with the base wheels and no AMG styling but that is a personal choice.

Look at any model besides the S and you will see a huge grille with a HUGE emblem in the center of it that even lights up. The LOOK AT ME I have a Mercedes group. The S is still bought by 50 and up crowd looking for a safe design. It will be interesting to see what the new model will have but I will wager the emblem will be larger and the hood star missing but avail as an option.

Mercedes is switching to sport vs luxury.

Don't currently own an S class, but I do like this first pic better as far as mellow styling as opposed to the second.

I’m happy for those who love the look of their AMG Line W222’s, but I prefer my sedans to look more stately, elegant & subtle. In addition, I have a big problem with the pricing of the AMG packages, especially on the S Class. I would venture to guess that the production costs to produce the AMG body panels & wheels are not ten cents more than what it costs to produce the standard parts. MB has truly found a gold mine of extra profit by convincing so many people that opting for the AMG packages will somehow make them look and drive like James Hunt as they cruise down the boulevard.

Myself I think the Amg line looks a lot better I leave my car in sport suspension mode all the time and being lower like that with the rocker mouldings and rear deck spoiler and front end styling I feel it’s one of the best looking cars I have ever owned plus don’t forget you get those cool air solenoid valves on the mufflers that’s make the car sound better in sport mode m. The 20 inch wheels are beautiful too. The lunar blue has really grown on me too.

Nice looking car, personally I never cared for an exhaust note on my luxury rides. I'd get a 63 if was that important.
