What MB did is basically heading to the plastic surgeon to change this and that - about their legacy - not the specific models themselves. It seems to me that they have totally set aside the brand identity that brought them to the heights they are/were at.

I don't find the 'new' screen tech daunting, just mostly pointless. So you can share content from the front to the back - big whoop. Does this assume the rear seat passengers don't know how to get the same screen/music? How much time are you really going to spend sharing your screen? MB seems to really be making a big deal of this, spending 75% of their video marketing on a 1% feature. Likewise telling the car you're tired and being told to take a break. Who'd have thought it? However, it does look like in this supposedly final version of the interior is a bit better integrated than I originally thought, based on the early leak photos. I just don't understand their heavy pushing of the least used features in the car, at least for now. Maybe they are holding back on the really useful improvements until the official launch.

95% of the video is showing the neat new stuff on the screens. I don't have a degree in marketing but the average age of the S Class driver has to be 45 and up (I know - many exceptions to that including most of us). Will a 55 - 60 year old gentleman really want to have to learn all the ins and outs of that screen?

OMG, news for you guys, the I6 (not V6) S500 has been sale in Europe for years. It's the same engine as the "53" models, 429hp here in the U.S, 435hp in Europe. The reason why Mercedes went with 500 and is going for "580" is because Americans make so much out of the badge on the back, the higher the better as witnessed by the comments here. Who cares what they calls it at the end of the day? Shouldn't the car count? No longer making cars, absurd notion. Yeah the tech is front and center, as all the greasy parts have nearly been perfected already. Even still this car will ride/handle/drive better than the W222 with ease I'm betting. It will deliver that plus the tech.

Will a 55 - 60 year old gentleman really want to have to learn all the ins and outs of that screen? The beautiful designo lines drawn on the dashboard and throughout the black wood paneling is not going to be standard equipment. Nor will those very lovely quilted seats. What they are showing in this particular vehicle is a trim level of the most decked out version. Entry level models without the lines and beautiful seats is going to look pretty simple and bland / bare. It's just the center screen and the screen by the steering wheel. Even the screens in the back will likely be optional. So what are we talking here - just a basic modern empty space. I always thought that was what a builder put together to give the customer the ability to customize. A bare white box which the customer will furnish to their taste. Sure if someone wants to put $150,000 into an S580 (is that the new number?) to deck it out per the video - but I doubt that will ever be the case.
Also FWIW - I don't know how many agree with me or not - but MB shouldn't have changed all the numbers - since they don't mean anything anyway. The S580 would have in the original philosophy been a 5.8 liter V8. So since things don't matter - they should have really just left all the nomenclature the same as the 70s 80s and 90s. To drive "an S500" was boss status. The S420 was also a V8. Now they have the S450 which is a V6 but yet it's a higher number than the V8 S420. Then they smartly changed the S550 to the S560 - which gave many the nostalgic feelings of the exemplary 560 SEL. Now they changed it to S580 which doesn't have a history.
BMW to some degree has done that too - the 740 was the V8 and the 750 was the v12. Now the 740 is a V6, 750 is V8 and 760 is V12. But - they've held this for more than 15 years. The customer has gotten used to it. A BMW 750 is your standard luxury V8. They won't call it the 770 next year. We can't gaurantee MB will change the number again when the refresh is revealed in 2024/2025.
Audi - A4 A6 A8 - stays the same with just the 3.0 4.0 and 6.0 modified I suppose. But the brand is solid and the customer knows.
It doesn't even sound smooth to say "I have an S580". When I think of someone that says "I drove an S500" I think of the legendary W140 - probably black on black - thick windows with the black line marker for the dual pane. Everything cheapened after that right down to the silly new numbers they assigned.
Why couldn't they just keep it all true to the brand and easily recognizable.
No doubt the car will sell just fine - the outside isn't ugly - the back looks a bit cheap but will wait to see what it looks like. The front - the same - looks like they stuck on that grille after the hood was designed and "made it fit".
But as far as the customer wanting to be that interactive with the car? Whatever. "Mercedes, I'm Tired" - who the hell is going to actually tell that to their car.

Your post is heavy on the doom and gloom.
Since when is any car manufacturer showcasing their base model? Nor will anyone in the US even be able to buy a base S-Class. These can only be had in other countries.
I remember the exclusive Nappa leather is a measly $2200 or so on the S560, so hardly worth mentioning. The car is getting bigger, quieter, has more tech and more capable for a similar base price, plus it looks great too IMO.
As for engines, it is effectively the performance that matters, no the number of cylinders or nomenclature.
The old 500SEL V8 was making 265hp or so, the new V8's in the W223 will top out at over 800hp. The S63 will have 700hp.
As for tech, Mercedes doesn't design cars for people that are stuck on flip phones and neither does anyone else. The question is if the tech is user friendly and intuitive enough not to be a burden

Mercedes is clearly advancing so they don't wind up like Cadillac and Lexus, i.e. irrelevant. The tech is overwhelming, but if you take the time to actually learn about it, I'm betting anyone here can grasp it. That said I still see people holding their phone in their hand while driving in cars that I know have bluetooth and have had it for years. Why would Mercedes cater to such people? The S-Class is supposed to be and also advance the state of the art automobile, it is what the S-Class, SL and S Coupe have all done over the years in varying degrees. Most mechanical innovation is already done, it's going to be electrics, batteries, and design that push things forward now.

As you say, I don't think Mercedes should cater to people who are technology illiterate. Lexus, Lincoln and Cadillac serve that market.

I have never found the tech overwhelming. It is pretty user friendly and way more accessible and usable than the pre-MBUX models. Also the dealer has a concierge who can walk you through it.

So, tomorrow is the big reveal. I wonder what time? Since Germany is six hours later than the eastern USA, does anyone think we may actually see something this evening?

2021 or 2022 S Class Model Year Designation
Awaiting new S Class model: W223.
Will it be be designated 2021 or 2022?
Love our current rides and the especially the twin turbo V-8s.
However, if we have to jump to an AMG to get a V-8 I may buy another 2020.
We got caught in past model changeovers only to be disappointed in long delays for the introduction and the desired model (4-Matic).
And, much prefer to avoid introductory year gremlins.
