That is incredibly frustrating. This is my second '21 S580, first one the dealer was kind enough to unwind the deal take the car back and get me into my current 580. I will be taking this one in for the 3rd time this week for the same continued issue of rough downshifts. I'm almost to the point where I can anticipate the rough downshift while decelerating and forewarn my wife that its coming. Love the car and all the features, disappointed in the reliability.

Hey… I have had the same issues with mine since I got it. Haven’t had it checked but it’s so frustrating.

have you had yours fixed? Any update?

I traded the S class in and got an EQS. Been trouble free since!

Same exact issue I observed. Brought it up to the dealer. "No issues observed on the test drive". Basically, the answer I got on all the issues I reported were "GFY". No codes, no problems, no updates, no repairs, nothing. I'm learning to live with the car and its gremlins, looks like I'm keeping it for a while. The lesson I learned is lower your expectations, try to enjoy the positives instead of dwelling on the negatives, never buy another Mercedes, the end. Maybe I'll get "lucky" like my buddy with his suspension issues that the dealer can't fix after replacing sensors, harnesses and now the entire driver-front suspension assembly. His car is getting bought back. Last thing I want to do at this point is take a $30k hit and start shopping for another car in this insane market.

Harsh downshifting 9G-tronic transmissions have plagued MB across various models for years now. I have a 2020 S560 that has a very harsh 3-2 downshift.
My dealer REPLACED the transmission and torque converter, but the problem still persists and MBUSA has agreed to buy the car back. I was told by the dealer that the problem had been cured and that all W223’s would be fine. It appears from this thread that this is not the case.
Amazing!
This thread serve as an interesting survey of field experience. Granted the comments are not a scientific measure, yet that's what's going on right now.

It is unfortunate MB has been struggling with these poor 3-4 shifts for nearly 10 years across chassis and gearbox incarnations... same difference!

Dealers and factory are overwhelmed no understand the problem root cause. Everything from cold/hot adaptations, to miraculous firmware updates 12Mo. later...

The engineers seem genuinely unable to grasp this nasty performance bug. It reflects poorly on all other efforts.

It's not a gearbox issue, it's a system issue shared by many chassis (..."not all cars are affected"). I bet all the dealer authorized buy back & charges are stacking up to costly levels.

Being affected, I am personally testing a comprehensive enhancement to retire that class of issues.

I can say it's not tranny snake oil !

Allow me first to test my assumptions and realize if my thoughts can become a worthy contribution.

In the meantime and in between time, you can keep up with ATF service to prevent unfiltered clutch sludge from building up.

I wish I could understand "Harsh downshift" - (I dont have time to ramble).

I recently did the "Secret Trans Reset" on my E63S....as I had stated in another thread, it started to drive like another MB car in "Sport Mode", but still getting to 4th before 50mph. My normal day to day driving (me with a heavy foot and bad attitude) it would hold first gear and second gear to about 3500rpm. On the downshift it was more of an engine breaking than a smooth downshift.....

So, translate that to the GLS550...my far more mature, far less aggressive other half drives that car and in C it drives me INSANE. It holds shift forever...and ever....and ever....it is smooth. It feel slushy (is that a thing?). So, I put it into sport mode and it drives more the way I want it to drive. Now, fast forward again to when the trans "learns" my driving style....well, then it feels the way I like it to feel - and she complains that the car feels like something is off because the Trans is acting funny....

Bring this to a test drive in a V8 Turbo car. Sure as can be the sales person or test drivers are going to "See what she can do" and off they go. The Trans thinks it knows the driver....and has yet to learn who is driving. So, this may be a part of it.

On top of the fact that at 90k the car wants motor mounts and a trans mount, as well as all the fluids changed.
