Retrofit active ambient lighting

Hi Folks,

Do you know if we will be able to retrofit the active ambient light for those who had this standard feature removed? Not sure if the led are just not there behind the black panel or if they are off because of the missing chips. If the former, I assume the install would be straightforward but I'm not an expert.
Any idea if the Mercedes dealer service would do it?

Thanks

I would imagine the only thing missing is the computer chip which is probably embedded somewhere in the car. Probably extremely difficult.

this has to be modular as I have to imagine they need to be able to replace it when there is a problem.

If you look at the function diagram (pe82.20-p-2505-97a), there is one common control unit but in addition to that, all the led strips are "a control unit" and need to be replaced with the 878 option.

There might be an additional problem. I have Active Ambient Lighting, but it has to be activated in the assist settings for each of the individual functions that it works with. For instance, when turning on Blind Spot Assist there is another setting in that section “Warning Assist” that you must check for the active ambient lighting to work with blind spot assist. The purpose is to allow the driver to select which functions they want active ambient lighting activated for, or it can remain off. You need to check if cars that had the active ambient lighting deleted still have the “Warning Assist” box under blind spot warning and the other functions that it works with. If “Warning Assist” is not there, it may have to be programmed in separately. Just another thing to look into.

Thank you. Do you know where I can find the diagram?

Mercedes WIS (Workshop Information System). Google often finds them too.

I have not studied this at all but I'd say there is no need for a SW update on different control units other than those mentioned earlier. The SW typically covers different combinations of options but there must be multiple control units that need to be made aware of e.g. this active ambient lighting if retrofitted. This should be done by using VeDoc to add the 878 option to the car in question and after that SCN code the car with the diagnosis tool. You are certainly right that the assistance menus need to be activated among many other details (not all are visible to the driver).

I was told definitely NO. Problem is it isn't just ambient lighting in the new model the ambient lighting is part of HVAC, Lane assist, etc. It was just not worth not waiting for me as dealer also had no clue what parts weren't included.

Watch D Demuro review he shows all the ambient light features.

Quite likely a definity no for several reasons but if an expert says so, he/she should give proper arguments. How is this part of HVAC etc? Active ambient lighting would not change the way HVAC or Lane assist work but it takes information via CAN (likely flexray in this car) from HVAC and Lane assist etc. This info is available from the bus anyway, those other control units do not even need version coding.
