How can you bypass Carplay to get the contacts and texts on the MBUX for the S580

I noticed that when I activate carplay on the S580 with the iPhone 12, the contact list and text messages from the phone disappear under the phone menu. I found this odd and when I turn off carplay the contact list and text messages come back up under the phone menu. Is there anyway to bypass this? I noticed that this is NO issue with my android Samsung Note 10+ with android auto which I find way better than Apple and carplay. It has not been an issue on the Audi so I wonder if its a MBUX thing.

No, that's normal behavior and I thought it was the same with Android. While CarPlay is active, Bluetooth is disabled and all the phone functions are handled by CarPlay and not MBUX. That's why you don't see your contacts. Works like this in every car. Basically only one system can be actively handling the phone functions at a time. Same happens if you start navigation on CarPlay or AA, it stops the MBUX navigation.

Very interesting because I have my iphone for work and my Samsung Note 10+ as my personal phone and when I am using AA on my Samsung Note, I can still go back to the phone menu and pull up the contact list and read all my texts, respond to the texts etc... I had no idea carplay deactivates the full bluetooth functionality until I turn it off then it goes back to the phone contacts etc. Navigation also works separately with AA but I have yet to try that with carplay.

That's interesting about AA. How does that work if you get an incoming call? Which side handles it? Does MBUX ring or AA or both? CarPlay basically fully replaces the Infotainment's phone functions, which somewhat makes sense. No confusion or conflicts. I don't recall a 100%, but I think it even remaps the physical Tel button in the center console if there is one, so pressing it takes you to the CarPlay Phone app.

So on my RS7 I answer incoming calls on AA which is defaulted to it but I can do both functions to make phone calls or respond to text messages. If I am not using AA the audi MMI takes the standard incoming calls but I have yet to try that on the S580. I made few calls through AA on the S580 but havent received any calls recently but will give it a try. I agree it saves confusion and conflict when one handles everything and not both but I am a very tech savy guy so I like to have options. Nonetheless the carplay works great with texts and siri but I cannot see or read my texts on carplay unlike on the Mbux system with carplay deactivated.

Ah, I see. That makes sense. So basically whatever system is in the foreground handles the phone functions. That's one way to go. With CarPlay if there's an incoming call it will bring CarPlay in the foreground if it isn't already and the CarPlay call screen comes up. Two different approaches to the same problem I guess. Personally, I don't actually use CarPlay very often, and take/make phone calls even less while driving, so most of the time the Bluetooth side handles everything. I use Siri Eyes Free (long press of the steering wheel voice control button) to issue commands directly to the phone even when it's on Bluetooth. For example I use Siri to send text messages as it works much better, but use COMAND 5.5 in my case to read incoming text messages.

Yep you made a good point about the long press on the voice command button which I have been doing with both carplay and AA to activate Siri etc. It works well. Btw if I want to play spotify and select the songs to play from a certain playlist, there is no better way to go about to do that than using carplay right? I can pull up carplay and play the track on spotify within my album then deactivate it and play through bluetooth? Its kind of a lengthy step process because when I get in the car and use my bluetooth audio to play the music it will only play the last track of that certain album on spotify but if I want to play another album or search for new music it doesnt let me unless I go back to car play or take out my phone from the pocket. I guess its best to just use my Samsung Note 10+ when I am driving.

When using Bluetooth then you are controlling the media player via the AVRCP profile. I don't know which version MB supports, but it has some browsing capabilities, but no playlist support. App specific functions can really only be done on the phone directly or via CarPlay/AA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Profile_(AVRCP)

Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)[edit]

This profile is designed to provide a standard interface to control TVs, Hi-fi equipment, etc. to allow a single remote control (or other device) to control all of the A/V equipment to which a user has access. It may be used in concert with A2DP or VDP.[4] It is commonly used in car navigation systems to control streaming Bluetooth audio.

It also has the possibility for vendor-dependent extensions.

AVRCP has several versions with significantly increasing functionality:
  • 1.0 — Basic remote control commands (play/pause/stop, etc.)[5]
  • 1.3 — all of 1.0 plus metadata and media-player state support[6]
    • The status of the music source (playing, stopped, etc.)
    • Metadata information on the track itself (artist, track name, etc.).
  • 1.4 — all of 1.3 plus media browsing capabilities for multiple media players[7]
    • Browsing and manipulation of multiple players
    • Browsing of media metadata per media player, including a "Now Playing" list
    • Basic search capabilities
    • Support for Absolute volume
  • 1.5 — all of 1.4 plus specification corrections and clarifications to absolute volume control, browsing and other features[8]
  • 1.6 — all of 1.5 plus browsing data and track information[9][10]
    • Number of items that are in a folder without downloading the list
    • Support for transmitting cover arts through the BIP over OBEX protocol.
