How to turn off speed limit function S580?

I am new to S580 and have put about 300 miles on mine. I am wondering how to turn off speed limit function. Whenever I pass a speed limit sign the car automatically drops the speed to the posted sign. For a new to S class owner that’s really annoying and a couple times found it dangerous as I was trying to pass. Any input appreciated.

Just curious about the exact scenario. Is it that you are overtaking a car and the speed limit then changes to a lower figure? Why not take control with the gas pedal?

I admit it takes time to get used to the speed limit assist and cruise control. I insist keeping speed limit assist active in order to avoid missing reduced speed limits (and our ridiculous speeding fines) but speed limit assist does not drive at "GPS speed" but "the speedometer speed", makes it very difficult to drive a bit faster than the speed limit and also difficult to drive a lower speed. Often want to save fuel (battery) on highways where others can easily pass a lower speed car.

Thanks for the input. I was able to find the speed limit assist in the settings and turned it off. I just hope it doesn’t need to be repeated with each new engine start.
I was accelerating in the left lane at 75 in a 65 mph zone. The speed limit sign appeared just as I got to the higher speed and I felt the car take a sudden deceleration move. Just didn’t know what was going on and it caught me off guard. Yes I reaccelerated through it. It was a little scary and disconcerting till I figured out what was going on. Anyway we”ll try to keep that thing off. The speed limit sign recognition is always on the dash anyway and I am aware of the limit and can do without external help.

When my car gets here it's going to be the third with speed following; that previous experience tells me I won't be using it. For me it creates as many problems as it solves. An example would be that here on the freeway when the speed limit is 70 everyone is doing 80. The limit will frequently drop down to 60 in which case everyone is still doing 80, except for you, if you let the car have a say in it. Or when it slows down for a school sign that is only in effect if the light is flashing, it's not, but the car slows down anyway. Or the caution speeds for corners that are often followed by no one because they're ridiculously conservative. Or...
Outside of all the little scenarios where it sometimes seems to be trying to stab you in the back there is also the way the go about it: Mine have braked unnecessarily hard for speed reductions and it sounds like the same will happen here based on posts above.

I successfully turned off the speed limit sign recondition in settings. However it still exists in the depths of the cruise control. It does recognize a change in the speed while cruising which is ok and I could appreciate that on long drives. But in several instances it comes up with incorrect reading. Here is an example of driving on I-80 this weekend when it dropped the limiter to 35mph in an 80 mph highway. It could be really annoying if not dangerous to the car following you or next to you and your own safety. Anyway, just wanted you all to be aware and be ready for occasional excitement on your higher speed drives.

I did not consult the manual but did you actually "only" turn off the speed limit sign from the cluster or is that photo after the changed setting?

I thought you would need to switch off cruise control features from drive assist menus to get rid of speed limit adaptation and route based speed adaptation.

I don't have a W223, but the sign recognition and the distronic speed assist are different features...I have the speed assist turn off, but it still recognizes the signs and displays them on the IP.

One thing I noticed, is even with the speed assist OFF it does back off from speed a little in a sharp highway curve. When it was on it would slow down considerably, now it backs off 2-3 MPH which is fine.

For some reason the PDF is not letting me copy; go to page 222 in the owners manual and read from there to page 224 to get this turned off. As SW20S has described, sign recognition and speed following are two different things. Sign recognition, unlike the incredibly irritating speed following, can be handy; may want to wander back into the settings and turn it on if it wasn't bothering you.

I”ll look it up see how to turn off the cruise control sign recognition. I don’t know if I can. The above happened to me where there was no traffic sign. The car came up with an arbitrary speed limit of 35 mph in the middle of interstate and tried to drop its speed.

Speed limit assist does not work solely on the traffic signs read by the camera, it also uses speed limit info from the maps database. Actually at least older Mercedes models put too much bias to the database, haven't learned enough from the 223 yet to say if it is the same. If the section of the speed limit info within the maps database changes, the speed limit display is updated and cruise adapts to that too.

I understand in this case it was not a truck with a 35 sign at the rear that sometimes confuses the traffic sign assist.

Several of the previous posts say how to disable speed limit assist, assume that is what you were after.
