My New W223 S580 - New Project

Just picked up this 2022 W223 S580, I ordered it while having my W222 S63 being serviced since there is no ETA on the W223 S63. It's slow but smooth as heck. Current plans are to Tint, PPF, Black Out, Wheels & Lowering just a bit.

RandT clocked the S580 0-60 at 3.9 seconds. You consider that to be slow?

It seemed pretty slow compared to my Panamera. So much more cushy though... In any event, congrats on the new ride!

Exactly. But it also depends on what you're used to. A Z06 C7 made my regular C7 feel slow.

Feels slow to me too, coming from a BMW 760. TBH it doesn’t really feel like it goes 0-60 in 3.9.

Let's face it, 4.0 seconds isn't what it used to be back in the bad old days. Also in my mind the cush seating, soft feel to the shifting, lack of sound, were certainly reducing the felt drama. All that said I'm going to need to see end users regularly hitting 3.9 before I buy it as a legit number; not enough data points yet.

Thank you fellas. I'll update the thread as I go. Just dropped it off at the PPF shop for Tint, PPF, ExoShield on the windshield & Ceramic Coating. Just had it hardwired for my radar yesterday. I do not plan on speeding in this lol, I have a few fast cars that get the job done.

Its unquestionably a very fast car, it just doesn't have any drama which doesnt make it feel fast. But, get on it and look away for a second and look down at the speedo and you'll be doing 100. Its fast lol

Just a few update photos. So far I have blacked the trim out, painted the calipers & tinted all around. Still trying to figure out what wheels I want to go with.

Interesting pics of the W222 and W223 next to each other. IMO, the W223 grill looks strange and much prefer the W222 lights and grill.

What is the extra sensor or maybe camera on the center grill section? It looks out of place. Did MB remove the motorized door in the grill to hide the camera when not in use?
Maybe that's the Night Vision camera sensor? If so, MB did not made any effort to conceal the camera. The Night Vision camera is hidden on the W222 and not exposed as shown here.

They removed the motorized door for the camera. The tradeoff is that the camera pokes out and actually looks side to side as you turn the wheel now which improves the visibility and usability of the camera.

I generally prefer the look of the front of the 222 also, but was just thinking blacked out like that the slimmer headlights on the 223 look much better.

After a bit of research I discovered the change to the front camera. The attempt to justify this change with improved tech has failed due to the visual molestation of the front grill. The symmetry is gone and your eyes are drawn to the flaw in the design.

I also discovered that Night Vision has been eliminated from the option list. The claim is that "Digital Light" will provide the replacement tech for the missing Night Vision. They illustrate this function by illuminating the pedestrian with the spotlight from the new headlights which is very similiar to the operation of the Night Vision with pulses of light on the pedestrian. The "Digital Light" system also shows an illumination path on the roadway from the car to the pedestrian which the earlier version of "Multibeam" headlights did not provide.

The end result is we loose the following:
  • Full screen active video showing the infrared image of everything in front of your car on the roadway
  • Automatic activation of the video screen when detecting pedestrians and highlighting them in a box on the screen
  • Ability to activate the infrared camera manually to visually inspect the area in front of the car
  • Ability to modify the software to identify animals in addition to humans. I don't know but doubt the "Digital Light" is able to be modified in this regard.
  • Flashes/Pulses of light for identifying pedestrians
  • Very cool technology that has shown to be a reliable safety system
All that was gained by the replacement tech is the illumination of the roadway between the car and the pedestrian and the light is constant and doesn't flash at the pedestrian.

Very difficult to find any documentation from MB referencing the deletion of this technology. It is as if they knew they were giving up something special and replacing it with a lower level tech and had no good reason for this change other than it saves cost.
IMO, they developed the headlight technology to the level they could provide some elaborate control of the light beam and thought this would compensate for the loss of the Night Vision. The new lighting system is a fantastic improvement and allows for this expansion of the abilities but it doesn't make up for the loss of some of the Night Vision features and aspects. The Digital Light just can't get there so it is a gain in some ways but overall a loss in tech functionality.

Yes, you can say it was older technology developed decades ago but it was still cool and it worked as intended. It was limited to certain models as an option and was only standard on a very few hi-end models so it was not prevalent across the MB fleet.
It's sad to see it go away and it's also sad to see what they did to the front grill design. More bad decisions by the iPad loving Ola Källenius.

YOUR eyes might be drawn to that but it doesn't bother me in the slightest lol. Lots of vehicles have off center cameras and sensors. Have you seen the new Bentley Continental?

If I have to choose between the most effective sensor or camera and whats the best "looking" I will take the most effective camera or sensor.

No interest or care in night vision either, and its something very few cars had. The front grill design is the same MB shield design, its just a slimmer more modernized look.

The downside to the night vision is you have to look down onto the gauge screen to see it, the digital light gives alerts and draws focus to things actually out in the road through the windshield where your eyes should always be focused anyways. I think the digital light technology is very cool

But the tradeoff is you have a self driving car.

For sure but at that point I was thinking why not be chauffeured around or just use ride sharing.

Have to pay a chauffeur, and ride in an Uber with a driver. Being self driven in your own car in many circumstances is much better.
