Radar detector placement

I have a Uniden R8 on the way. Anybody have success with mounting detectors high on the windshield? Does it still “see” out the back window? Am I better off just having a remote system installed?

Metallic coated glass on the front & back windows prevents most radio signals. Only front center at dash level & a spot to the right of the mirror up high will work, but degraded or non-existant GPS. Maybe some side detection? That's why I went with the R4, same Dual LNA's but no need for arrows if it can't detect properly in any other direction than straight ahead due to the vehicle design. Get you money back, then get the R4

I haven't used a radar detector in many years. I'm sure that the technology is much improved both for the detectors and for the police. Have you tried Waze? I find that it's very good at warning “police reported ahead”

I am probably going to be in the minority, but I got all the fast driving out of my system in my 20’s. Haven’t owned a sports car since and have almost no desire to get one although my friend’s C8 Vette is damn sweet. I’m driving the big Benz in Eco mode and enjoying every single moment of it. I don’t think I’ve had it faster than 70 yet 🤣

Radar detection range has increased with the dual low noise amplifiers they use now. Problems faced are rejecting false alarms from other vehicles with radar collision avoidance and autonomy drive systems. Picture every new car model emits a different signal that radar detectors have to be programmed to reject. Some can be updated.

Most radar detectors detect laser also. Similar deal in the W223 as the windshield & rear window have a metallic coating that can block laser signals to the built in laser detector.

Laser is very popular and harder to evade. Most states allow remote laser parking aids on your vehicle that supplement your factory parking assist. These exterior mounted parking aid transceivers may affect consistent laser gun return signals that are bounced off your vehicle. These parking aid transceiver emissions should be shut off at the right moment and then switched back on if need be

Im actually having the Radenso + ALP system installed in the 580 in a few weeks. Not crazy about the size of the AL heads but there is no better PARKING SENSORS on the market today LOL

I'm waiting for the Uniden remote PARKING SENSORS if they ever release them for the R4/ R8. There is a data jack on the side for them.

You can kinda see these two clear areas in the right light. Notice that the lower opening near the dash is wider than the one near the mirror. We put our EZ Pass transponder at the top opening and run the R4 with the supplied suction cup mount & resting on the dash. Not the ideal set up for the radar detector as I would have like to run it up higher but that opening just didn't seem large enough.

A few early versions of the Crown Vic Interceptors had similar heated metallic windshield coatings and were exposing the officers to unwanted radiation as their dash mounted radar units bounced RF back into the cab

I wonder how many people would actually use the cigarette lighter for smoking purpose?
I bet, most (if not all) would use it for a dashcam and/or radar detector.

BTW, this--->

Directly below the dash, oposite the driving position, just next to the top of the console under a liitle black plastic flip-up lid. Quite the vehicular accident causing location it is to access. Surprised there's not a warning sticker on it. Shuts on & off with ignition.

So, reviving this thread to ask if anyone has hard wired a detector? I want to install my Escort 360 Max before I head to S Florida from Houston next week and since I don't yet have the car, I am clueless as to where hardwire the detector. Also, it doesn't look like there is a way to mount it except for a suction cup...am I mistaken?

Thanks...

Not yet, but Uniden is finally coming out with the remote add-on laser system for the R4 & R8. Both have Bluetooth connectivity now. They released the R9 that is basically a complete remotely wired R8 laser & radar unit. Cost is 4K US

So far, been using the suction cups, but someone crafty with a 3D printer could make something up that would stick/ slide in the vent slat openings on top of the dash. No way I'm putting Velcro on a leather dash.

I've been using radar systems in the S Class for a while now. Previous system in my W222 was a Max Ci 360, I now have the Redline Ci 360c in my 223. You will not get superior coverage using the cut outs in the windshield. While it may work for detecting signals out front, ALL other signals side and rear are still blocked by the RF blocking glass (this has been my experience).

The Ci 360's are installed behind the front and rear bumpers, and I have my GPS antenna right underneath the bottom cut out of the front glass.

System works flawlessly.. but definitely not cheap (usually 4-5k installed). I also have my display installed in my rearview mirror..

Yeah, thanks for the input. I'm definitely not going the 4-5k route...that'll pay for a lot of tickets! I'll use Waze and the best of what I can get out of my windshield mounted 360.

Cool factor is off the hook on that mirror display!

You don't need a sports car to realize that many speed limits are arbitrary and stupid, and also that speed limits are enforced arbitrarily and stupidly, since it's not actually about safety, but another a legal form of corrupt tax revenue for municipalities. This becomes 10x more apparent when you drive a vehicle that's designed to be comfortable at what we stupidly and again, arbitrarily, call "reckless driving" here.

So yeah, get a radar detector.

I am curious about the installation of that system. Can you share some pics of inside? I am assuming that outside units are hidden behind the bumper so they are not visible. Also, correct me if I am wrong, you chose not to install the laser jammers? But is you did can you show the picture also
thanks

Not much to look at on the outside, I DID install the jammers they are just set to receive only.

Shopping an e class wagon
@Warehouser : Very nice install. Can you share more as to what brand you opted for? Also any info you have on the rear view mirror display would be appreciated. I'm debating on jammers as well.

Much appreciated.

if you have not committed on that combo already, consider going with Uniden R9.
I have multiple cars with RC-M with ALP combo. RC-M's performance is at best .....meh.....

I switched them all to Uniden R9. sooooooooooooo much better in both radar AND laser.

if you look at it from outside with a pair polarized sunglasses under the sun, you can see the opening clearly too.
