Official 2023 ordering thread.

These threads are popular in the various car forums and as I have a 23 on order I thought I'd start one here. The idea is to discuss various tips and tricks, keep up with current constraints, shipping, etc.

My car was scheduled for build in the last ten days of August and May be built now. I try and avoid checking up on it too much because I've learned it can eat me alive with other cars I've ordered. I'll probably check in after the start of September and see what actually made it on the car. As of a week ago nothing had been deleted for credit except the kick to open trunk option.

One tip worth sharing was given to me by another poster; can't recall the name but all credit to him. I had complained about not being able to select all the options I wanted and he suggested ordering and try to add them during the wait. This worked: I had not been able to order 4D, exclusive leather, or active ambient, but they all became available to select during the weeks after.

Anyhow; welcome to the thread; this will be my first S class, I'm more of a sports car guy.

Congrats on the build! Curious as why the move from sports cars to an S-Class. I did a similar move due to needing a vehicle for work with a large back seat and that could eat up highway miles and haven't regretted it, been an excellent daily. That being said, I do have my Miata for my sports car itch every so often.

Getting old, it's harder to climb in and out every day. I decided to try a luxury car and get a more directed sports car for the fun stuff. I've been thinking GT4, manual. Waiting for the ordering to become a little less painful; it's about at much fun as a root canal to order a Porsche right now.

I was actually considering a Miata; my brain says I need more power but on the test drive I was practically giggling.

There's a reason why Miata is always the answer One of the only pure lightweight cars left, at less than 2500lbs, and still one of the best manual transmissions on the market.

I've had BMW's for years, last one being an M2 Competition and Z4 M, and it was fun and all, but the Miata is the best for me because I can enjoy it at low speeds and the maintenance is easy. The M2 was nice but too numb, and the Z4 M which replaced it was full of life, but problematic and leaving me stranded. Modern sports cars are great, but they are too fricking fast and just aren't made for the roads where I drive, and don't have much feel left in them due to electronics. I'm not really doing track days anymore, so I couldn't justify a GT4 and its tall gearing. My father-in-law has one, and I've driven it on track, its fantastic, but its definitely more suited at the track with the tall gearing of the manual. A Miata of any generation is a great choice, I went with an NB purely bc it was cheap and I love hydraulic steering and cable throttle, and I'm a sucker for convertibles.

There are gears available now so you can fix that problem. I know exactly what you mean about being able to use the power more, the weight, everything. Your spot on.

Great timing! Congratulations. My 580 is scheduled to be built tomorrow-ish. Graphite grey, Manufakrur Deep White, AMG, rear wheel steering, ambient, and I sprung for the the E-ABC from the top of my head. I ordered it with the 21’s and fully expect all of the tires to spontaneously explode in month one after reading way too many posts. (My salesperson is getting me a full spare to keep just in case). I probably should have gone with the 20’s. I went back and forth on selenite grey mango vs graphite gray. I hope I the graphite gray as I have not seen a S in this color yet.

It is a first world problem but I’m not nearly excited as I normally am. I have gone from a C32 19 years ago to an E55, S65, two S63’s and now a GT63 (with other MBZ’s thrown in there). I love so many things about my GT63 (especially the exhaust and power) but the ride is a bit rough. When I sat with my salesperson months ago there really were no exciting replacements (could not order another GT63 or S63). I had a s580 for a loner for 3 weeks after my GT was scratched while in service. It drove so smoothly and was incredibly quiet. I’m going for relaxing and smooth vs performance with this one.

Hello Benjamin. Yes, the 2023's have the rear entertainment system as part of the executive package.

Update: Just got an email from my dealer, the car has been built. A few things that may or may not be of interest...

There is a new line in the itemization: 2B7 HANDS-FREE ACCESS in the load compartment discontinued. This exists along with D9B Credit for missing standard 871 Hands Free Access which has been on the order from day one whereas the 2B7 first showed up on the as-built list. Anything I should know?

Everything I ordered is in the car including active ambient, 3D, 4D, etc. Easier to list what I didn't order which is the E-ABC, otherwise the car is loaded. Not sure if I got lucky or if the dealership was straight up when they said they are being told from upon high that there will be better availability of the options on ordered cars in 23.

The rear seat entertainment package is on the car. As near as I can tell that gives me some wireless headphones, "high-end rear seat entertainment system", and rear energizing. No idea what the high end entertainment system might be.

One other new thing showed up that wasn't on the previous build lists: Integrated Starter Generator generation 2. Not sure if it has any meaning. it wasn't there before.

Now it's on to fretting over how soon it can get put on a boat instead of whether my options will make it on the car. I call that progress.

I don't remember when I ordered to the day, somewhere toward the end of June. The 22s were still in production at the time and it was possible to modify an existing allocation but I figured I would move to 23.

Edit... There is some pricing on my order that might be of interest: The 4D goes from 6730 to 6800, 3D tech holds at 3k, exclusive leather also holds at 3110, as do 19" Aero wheels at 200, and the dotted console at 300. There is some kind of placeholder pricing for the executive model line item with it showing as 7,777,777; not a typo, that's what it shows. The dealership is expecting the pricing to go live within a few weeks.

My hope is they don't hold our cars at the VPC for an extended period of time. I had this happen in 2019 with my 2020 GT63. I was in the same situation where the MY changeover was happening at around the same time my car was supposed to be delivered. My understanding was that Mercedes will sometimes hold the new model year cars at the VPC until the current MY inventory is low enough. I get it from a business perspective. I would think that with inventories being low on many cars this won't happen. My dealership already told me they would get another S for me to drive if I go past my lease end date. I am getting a ton back for returning my lease instead of buying it out so it is worth driving a loner for a bit.

There isn't a ton of them on the ground; I wouldn't think they'd be held up too long but that may be wishful thinking. The dealership is telling me the most likely holdup is shipping right now; inventory is low enough that ordered cars should go out once they get here although floor cars might be held. Of course they have a tendency to tell you what you want to hear so who knows? I've also got a deal for a loaner if it's delayed but not an S class, their promise was "not terrible."

I have special ordered 3 or 4 cars from MBZ over the years. You are right as far as the time for car to head out to sea. It is dependent on how full the ship is. I have waited 2 weeks and other times the car made it to the port and went out in 24 hours.

My 22 Executive line S580's build date was 06/29/22 and as of yesterday, it was still sitting in Germany awaiting priority ONE shipment. The dealer has no idea what the shipping and eventual delivery time frame will be. I'm checking on it biweekly. I wonder what would happen if it wasn't priority ONE.

Priority one just means it's a customer ordered car I think? In any event mine was built the same day so it's possible they will be making the journey together. Did you get everything you ordered or were there credits?

My bad; I just saw the 29th, you've got a 22 built in June still waiting to ship. That is scary.

Woah, sitting since 6/29? I have never waited more than a few weeks with my previous cars from being built to getting on a ship. It’s a guess on my part but I don’t think they are kept indoors.

There are boats leaving every few days, I just looked at the route schedule. Wonder if it's on some kind of factory hold?

Yeah. Sitting out in the open for that long is one of my major concerns. Hopefully they have some super strong protective coating on it.

Mercedes S580
Factory Order vs. Inventory

Congrats on the build! Let us know how it turns out. I am going to be in the market for my first S class soon. My only disappointment from the test drive car was the upholstery. It felt a little rough and looked quite grainy. As it turns out, the test vehicle did not come with the standard nappa. It was credited a couple thousand bucks for the downgrade. The dealership had another S class in their inventory with the nappa-night and day difference. Top quality upholstery is part and parcel to owning a 6 digit luxury vehicle IMO. I went from being 100% certain that I would factory order to 100% certain that I'll buy from inventory. I hope your car is built in material compliance with your specifications!
