“Starter Battery Critical?”

This is new to me. Just over 2,000 on my 2022 S500. Zero problems. Car is driven daily. This just popped up on my “Me Connect.” Any idea as to what I should do next? Thx in advance.

This is usually caused by the car not shutting all the way down, which in turn is usually caused by it being unlocked with the fob too close in combination with short trips that don't fully charge the battery. In the case of the S-Class too close means your car and fob are on the same planet. Lock it up and you'll probably be ok. A bunch of very short trips can also do it even if it is locked, that means a change of habit for you. The 3rd possibility is something is hosed and it has to go in for service Rule out the first two and then unfortunately it's on to option three.

Thanks so much, Crabman! Makes sense as I never lock my car while it’s in my garage. Plus, I try to stick with the engine off setting…..which undoubtedly uses more battery. I will lock the car from now forward! As a corrective measure, I just took the car out for a 20 minute drive. Separately, my S500 with the 19s consistently gets amazing mpg. I’m documenting my drive yesterday from the Desert of So Ca into San Diego. Much of it is mountainous hilly single lane driving. Starts at sea level, climbing up to 5,000 feet and then back down to sea level.

I had recently a similar message on my W222 and had to change one of the batteries.

1. Can you explain "engine off setting" please? 2. The S500 is a mild hybrid, yes? And you can still accumulate EQ miles? TIA

SilberGrau57…..I was referring to the auto stop/start feature. The tach often drops to zero…extended periods on freeway. Pleasant actually, but probably a bit of a battery drain.

That has nothing to do with the starter battery.

The 48V battery is the starter battery. The auxiliary 12V battery is for "accessories"

In glide mode you may get a bit of 48V & 12V regenerative recharge but sitting with the engine off at a red light, both batteries will drain. There are several items that would be running utilizing both voltages at that time.

My 2023 S580 on ME calls it a "12V Battery" not "Starter Battery" but guessing they are both the 12V battery which are for "interior accessories" not an engine starter, I think. Curious, does the 48V battery/system power anything besides the 48V engine devices such as the turbo compressor, AC, power steering and brakes, water pump, alternator and coolant fan. I do understand that the 12V system will charge the 48V if needed and vice-a-versa, including passing 12V offline charging to the 48V battery for charging. Seems like way too many accessories for 12V car battery and one has to be very judicious when using the accessories without the engine running. Thanks for any clarity on this.
