How Our W223 Cars Are Made

I found this full-length documentary on how our W223 S-Class, EQS and Maybach sedans are built!

Very impressive video. It reminds me of a tour I took at the Buick factory in the 70s with a group of automotive industry people. We were watching Buick Electra bodies coming down the assembly line as a woman with a stick resembling a broom handle was guiding the body onto the frame below. Other GM employees were in "the pit" placing body mounts on the frame. Multiple mounts fell off, covering the pit floor. We looked with great surprise and concern at the floor now covered in fallen mounts causing one in our group to ask, "Isn't that a major problem with all those mounts falling off the frame as the Fisher body is lowered?" The Buick representative replied, " It's no problem, they always put extra mounts on, as they know many will fall off". I can only imagine this at the Mercedes factory!

Impressive as always, vehicle assembly. And generally the norm for any vehicle assembled by a legacy global automaker. The processes do not vary much between the large global automakers.

And with all that advanced machinery and apparently highly-capable people working on the factory floor, MB is still unable to fix the squeaky wiper problem that has plagued multiple vehicle models for god knows how many years? Fascinating

My wife and I were fortunate to have a tour of the Sindelfingen MB factory (about 20 min south of Stuttgart) where they produce the S class and now EOS. They only give a limited number of English speaking tours each week, small group of 20 and I had to make reservations months in advance. I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone planning a trip to Germany. To see the robots (and people) in the video is absolutely mind boggling. The campus is overwhelming.

I've owned many Mercedes-Benz vehicles and I've never had wiper problems, in fact very, very few problems at all. The only thing that comes to mind was a failed idler pulley on my 2007 S600.

Went back in 2006 and was amazed.

Then you are a member of the fortunate minority. I envy your luck.

Wiper squeaking and skipping has been a well-documented issue with various MB models for a long time now. I have personal experience with it (my W223 and previous ML350), and my dealer+detailer both report this as a very common occurence among MBs.

I have to agree with RW594 on the wipers, although it only affected my GLE. My S class seems fine.

But man, talk about almost negligently poor wipers on my GLE; they constantly skipped, streaked and were loud, all while not doing its base job of keeping water off of the windshield, Cars shouldn’t be allowed to leave the factory with wipers that are that poor. How Mercedes can mess up something so simple yet critically important is a bit strange. It’s not like a new technology lol.

It must have to do with their "Magic Vision Control"... just kidding.

That said, the wipers' issue is common and has been a problem for MB for a while now, never understood why it wasn't ever fixed though.

Edit:Oops, I mentioned the exact thing that someone already mentioned. Sorry about that.

Can't change **** when you have to prepare every millimeter of production years in advance.

I would say craptacular wipers should not be on any car; wipers that work without issue is a floor no car should be below when declared fit for production.

A high-end premium car must first and foremost get the basics right. It was immensely frustrating when my blinker was broken and I drove around seeing every cheap ****box from the 90s having working blinkers.... or a working rear driver's side door.
