New 2022 S580 or 2023 S580

Hi Everyone,
We are considering a 2023 S580 or a 2022 S580 - do you have a strong opinion for one or the other? The 2023 is a little more in price, is it worth it? I have been driving a 2016 740i and decided against the new 2023 740i.

Thanks!

I bought a new 2022 S580 back in March and saved over $15K off sticker by doing so. I've seen no downsides to buying a '22 model as the 22 and 23 models appear to be the same. Before you take delivery, have the dealership update the software packages for MBUX and other buggy software that is mentioned in this forum.

I’ve had my 22 S580 for over 18 months and from what I have read and heard no significant differences between 22 and 23.

If you can save a significant amount (say 10-15%) I would definitely go for a 22. There are some good deals to be had out there and some inventory so don’t be afraid to negotiate aggressively.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my S580 thus far, and yes there are some minor annoyances most of which can be dealt with by getting proper software updates. Don’t buy a car with 21” tires. You will see on this forum why. I have 20” and I wouldn’t go any larger than 20. Also don’t get the upgraded magic carpet suspension. Apparently it’s a disaster.

Good luck!!

What are the differences in specs between the two cars? If they are identical or close in spec, save the money and buy a '22 if you can get a significant discount. I've had my '22 since February last year and it has been excellent.

Thanks for the tips! What is the upgraded magic carpet suspension? Or which package is that?

E-ABC. Some say it can make the ride unpleasant in certain situations.

While it would be hard to quantify benefits there are silent changes make every model year. You also have to consider the trade value at sale if you're not leasing; you'll get more for a 23 sold in 26 than a 22 and keep in mind they'll be saying the 27s are only a few months away and using that as a bargaining position. Even if you buy a 23 you'll get that at trade, about it being an extra model year old when your purchasing and then selling in August.

Looking at the other side it's an important bargaining tool on your side, even a 23 needs a discount due to it being late in the model year outside of other considerations, a 22 has nearly 2 years depreciation on it now, you need a massive price cut on that to come up par at trade.

If you're leasing you still want to negotiate, it's that time of the year, 23s aren't new anymore in the car buying world and 22s are practically ready for the junkyard.

Is the 2022 brand new? I’d be a little concerned getting a 2022 this late in the 2023 run. My assumption is it would be a very late build car (vin in 150000s or 160000s) that just took a long time to ship and then wasn’t getting interest, in which case go for it. But if it’s an earlier built car that maybe was used internally by MB, say vin number in the 60000s or 70000s, I’d be a little more concerned. Check the build date.

Also know 2022s had a lot more shortages and production issues. So there might be more missing features/options.

There are always stragglers at dealers, couple of the dealers around here still have unsold 22s. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one for the right price. $5,000 less than a 23? Probably not the right price. $10k less? Sure.

What’s the spec you’re buying/ordering?

I'm doubtful about ordering a 23, at this point it should be a 24 for an order. Maybe he's referring to what's on the lots?

Yep - went with one on the lot, needed it ASAP because prior car was totaled. Needed one with the 3D tech package & warmth and comfort package. Per your advice, it has 20" wheels and no E-ABC. Thanks for the heads up on that. Pretty happy with it so far.

Glad I could be of help. Enjoy and congratulations! What colour combination did you end up buying?
