The fit and finish is nowhere near the same. I had a new C Class for a week, nowhere near the same. Of course they were not developed apart, they were designed by the same people.

Then all interiors from the same manufacturer are "the same". Your 222's interior is "the same" as an E Class or GLE or GLS or CLS

I don’t believe this is really in question, since starting with the W223 the S-Klasse is based on the same architecture as the C-Klasse and E-Klasse, and it has never been this closely related previously. The real question is moreso if and how distinct it feels/remains compared to the C-Klasse and E-Klasse (both of which have been full siblings for several decades). I would argue that Mercedes-Benz has done a better job than other manufacturers at keeping their flagship saloon/sedan distinct and separate enough from its lower-on-the-totem-pole relatives. Having been inside the current MRA lineup, I can say that going from the E-Klasse to the S-Klasse still feels like a serious step up, even if perhaps it isn’t as dramatic as it was during the W221/W222 era. However, having also been since some of the larger ICE powered Audi saloon/sedan lineup, I feel like the A8 is not really a step up from the A6 the way the S-Klasse is to the E-Klasse. BMW has also kept the 7er relatively protected from say, the 5er in the CLAR-WE era, but I feel like its territory is being somewhat infringed upon with how nice the X5/X6/X7 lineup is nowadays. Back when the Lexus GS was still around, I felt the the final generation was good enough/intruding on the LS territory sufficiently that it arguably no longer felt worth upgrading to the LS.
Some users keep saying “Oh, the C/E/S interiors are the same!!!” which I find to be an exaggeration. If you want identical, go look at the GLE vs the GLS interior; little if any substantive difference. Same deal with the AMG SL and the AMG GT, the interiors are quite literally 95-99% identical. Even the CLE interior is more guilty of being a slightly modified/pushed upmarket C-Klasse interior (which already is close to the GLC interior) compared to “identical interiors” in the E-Klasse and S-Klasse. If anything, the E-Klasse and S-Klasse actually have among the most unique interiors in the current Mercedes-Benz lineup, even if the styling is consistent… which it has been since even before the Bruno Sacco days.

As someone who had the final generation GS and upgraded to the LS in 2015 I also totally disagree. GS was MUCH smaller than the LS, and rode much more firmly and was not nearly as quiet, The 2GR V6 was nowhere near as refined as the 1UZ V8 either. The interior of the GS was extremely nice and in the luxury trim rivaled the LS in some ways, but overall the LS was still a huge upgrade from the GS.

So who going to package up all this refresh crap (err… suggestions) and send it to the CEO?
Guessing it’ll get blocked by his spam blocker and we’ll be stuck with what they think we want.

I actually do agree with your comparison between the N-Platform GS and LS: the LS I’m referring to is the 5th gen with the V6, stiffer ride, and more compromised interior comfort. Its “GS-ification” (likely the influence of Akio Toyoda) is what likely convinced Toyota that creating a TNGA-L GS would simply end up being far too similar to the 5th gen LS, and thus be redundant.

Has older C Classes ever look like the S Class like it does today?

For one I totally don't agree that the C Class and S Class interior now are copies of each other. They have a famillial resemblance like most other carmakers...
I think these interiors are no less similar than the current S and C:
Or these

To me the C-Class and S-Class look nearly identical in layout and design. Yeah there are small bits and pieces here and there that try to hide the similarities, but the resemblance is unmistakable. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if the interior quality was just better across the board. There’s just a lot of cheap plastic everywhere in the S Class to me.

The only interior bits that really bugged me were the cheap, fake, easily scratched, piano black. I was ok with the rest of it, although the surround for the screen was picking the gauge up a little bit on my cheapometer.

Someone earlier mentioned the “refresh” might not happen until 2027. Wouldn’t it just be an entirely new model at that point considering the time gap? The W224? If I’m facing the specter of having to buy the same model with the same C Class cheap plastic interior come lease end, I will get something else.

I am sure you read the other article or link/post or was it thread but someone mentioned the budget has increased for the W223 facelift hopefully that means better materials and build quality.

Guess you made the right decision of getting the pre-facelift W223 and at a healthy discount, since if 2027 is true, you would had been waiting for a long time for the facelift.

Serious enough to cut production. They need to gracefully retire the W223 and start anew with a solid and gorgeous 224. Our W220 which was not the greatest S and arguably the weakest S class generation was IMO better than the 223.
