Whining noise during steering while stopped or at slow speeds

Anyone else hear a subtle whining noise while turning the steering while while stopped or at very slow speeds? I admit I have rabbit ears but I can hear a whine when I turn the steering wheel. I usually have the radio on and vents on high but I happened to have everything off and I can hear it. I don’t believe it happens all of the time, just mainly when it’s hot. It sounds like a power steering pump but I thought our steering was electromechanical. Maybe it is motor whine?

Anyone else hear it? Is this normal? It drives and steers fine.

Yes, I had it. Brought it in twice and on both occasions tech responded with 'unable to reproduce costumer's complaints'. That was in the cool of Spring time. Now, we're in deep our Southern subtropical heat, the noise has resolved itself at least for now.

Thanks. Glad to know I wasn’t just hearing things. I think it’s the power steering motor that is whining.

You think so? It's electrically operated. What type of whining?

I would imagine it’s the DC motor that is causing it. For whatever reason, it’s emitting a whining noise under load (steering inputs). Just a wild guess.

I heard that whining noise as well. The dealer contacted the engineering department in Germany and with their astute guidance, traced it and found that the noise was actually coming from ME, as I constantly ranted and yes, “whined” (I’m SO embarrassed to admit it ) about the absolutely crummy, sloppy shifting transmission. Sure enough, the service manager put a piece of duct tape over my mouth and the noise went away. That was about the only time the dealer ever diagnosed a problem with my S580 correctly.

Oh man, I hate this sort of thing. Electric motor noises are just annoying. My LS has all sorts of servo-type noises and it bugs me here and there. A quieter more acoustically comfortable car is far and away the number one reason I’m interested in an S-Class despite not even driving much. I hate dealing with a half deaf mechanic who makes it seem like I’m the crazy one for expecting a flagship vehicle to not make irritating sounds.

This noise is happening more often. Any radio level or even slow driving would be enough to mask the sound so it would be easy to not even notice it. If anyone else wants to find out if they have this noise, I would turn off the radio, roll up all the windows and, while stopped or going under 5 MPH, turn the steering wheel. It sounds like a motor whine.
