2022 W223 P2407

Got a CEL. Code is P2407. When I pugged in my OBDII scanner I noticed that the service department at the dealer has (apparently) installed an OBDII adapter into the OBDII port. I know it was not there in the past as I recall seeing the cover hanging after a service and I personally reinstalled that dust cover. The "adapter" has a wire coming from it that disappears up into the lower dash. Anyone have any ideas what this "adapter" that is now on my vehicle is for?

Danger, Danger Will Robinson. Can you see where the mystery cable goes to?

Not without taking down / apart the lower dash cover. It was not there before the HUD replacement (which did not resolve the HUD Unavailable random message) under warranty at the dealership

I have a feeling mine has the exact same setup.
I'll have to check once I get home tonight.

Thats weird!

It looks like the kind of thing that you install for an aftermarket HUD.

Just for grins, when you unplug it like that does the HUD work? Does anything not work?

My guess from these photos is that Mbenz warranty tried a workaround solution after suspecting that your HUD wiring harness is the reason for your previous HUD issues; and hence they manually wired the HUD this way? Instead of doing a proper fix by installing new harness which likely needs the dash to be pulled out?
Is your car under warranty? You probably should asked them exactly what they did last time, and to read the tech notes. That's not a good way to wire the HUD, and could be the reason that you are seeing this code now.

Piggybacking into the OBD-II port that would could interfere with other module and even cause intermittent power or constantly polling CAN traffic that leads to that code.

Are you the first owner? Did you have GPS or insurance tracking device? Has this car ever been a demo car or loaner?

It was never a loaner. Second owner. Picked it up when it had 4700 miles. Warranty expired about 45 days ago. I have another thread about the HUD as it is the only issue (very random) that has never truly been resolved. They did get to the where it only occurs once every couple months. HUD was replaced under warranty 60 days ago. They must have removed the dash as the mechanics dirty hand stains are now on the forward pillars. They had it a couple weeks and the SA said that after escalation with MB that MB said replace the unit.

If you already have a record of a warranty-related case during the warranty period, you can still ask for a follow-up work covered under warranty even after the warranty had expired (of course as long as it is within a reasonable timeline). 45-60 days is very reasonable. Maybe take it back to them and let them first fix the HUD 100%, and as part of that, tell them that you have never seen this piggybacked adapter into the OBD-II port and see what they tell you.

When I had my first W222, the work on the transmission continued at least 10K miles after the warranty had expired, just because my 1st official case was started right before when warranty expired. Warranty claim is based on (when the issue was reported and case opened) not the mileage or timing of when the issue is being fixed. If the case was closed already, they can open it again.

If you are the 2nd owner, there is also a possibility that the 1st owner had a GPS tracking, or insurance mileage tracking device, and that you never noticed the adapter until now. I find it hard to believe that Mbenz would do something liek this even if they want to save labor... they wouldn't wire it that way.

The "adapter" was not there prior. If a W223 owner looks under the dash I would assume they will see the cover (that had a retainer strap) covering the ODB connection. It was a peeve of mine that (almost) every time it was in for something that the cover was dangling loose. When the cover is installed it was flush with the lower dash cover. Or I have inadvertently manufactured this memory...
I have reached out to the dealership SA & SM asking (with the pictures I included in this post) what this is and why but I have not yet received their response.

Mine does not have a cover, it looks like yours without that thing plugged into it.
