Funny smell after hard acceleration?
I've noticed that there is a funny smell from the car after hard acceleration. It's not necessarily a "bad" smell, it just smells like funny exhaust fumes or something. Hard to explain. Although if it was coming from the exhaust I'm not sure why I would smell it when driving 80mph - so maybe it's coming from the motor. Anyway, is this normal? Does anyone have any clue what I'm referring to? LOL It doesn't smell like burning oil or anything like that, it's hard to describe ... it just smells like the motor is working hard LOL

I know this is a very old post, but my car smells really bad after hard acceleration as well. I currently do not have the secondary cats on my 04 s55. The smell is bad and is giving me a headache. Even when all my windows are closed, i still can smell inside the cabin. Not sure if there is a exhaust leak and causing it to smell more when hard acceleration. I ended up buying a used full factory catalytic setup. Hopefully this fixes the smell. Does anyone experience the smell after hard acceleration?

A WOT will dump extra fuel into the system to keep detonation (knocking) from happening. This extra fuel will hit the catalytic converter more than normal driving and, as a result, will have an almost sweet smell for a few seconds. TLDR - it's probably extra fuel getting burned off/downstream and it's 100% normal.

Hi,
Mine is not a sweet smell from the car. Its smells like burning oil i believe. Im thinking its probably has a leak somewhere and is hitting the exhaust, but not sure.
I know its leaking somewhere on the driverside, but whats strange is when my car is idleing and i checked underneath the hood, i do not smell anything.

Lol.... When I had the E-55 it would smell of burning tires with regularity. Not from lighting them up. From using the power and brakes. She always knew when I'd been a savage.
As for burning odors... Get her up on a hoist and find the oil leak. Rear main seals leak. The o-rings between block and oil filter housing leak. Cam cover gaskets leak. The passages on top of cam covers leak. Everything is fixable. *Crack! Get to it!
oh... Engine mounts that are dead leak that ick too. They are bad when you smell that ick hitting exhaust!

Wow! This smell is giving me a headache. I think its more like strong exhaust fumes inside the cabin. I dont smell anything when i rev the engine while parked. It seems tho it tends to smell after the supercharger engages. Does anybody experiencing the samething? I really need some answers.

I have the smell every time I accel hard and it’s not a bad smell.. just maybe a slightly sweet smell.. smells a little like fuel.. it’s to stop pinging and because I have high flow cats and no secondaries... didn’t happen with the stock exhaust.

When i took off the intake and plenum, there was oil around the ports. I may need a oil catch can. Also, the peak boost seems low on my car with 77mm pulley. I will be taking off my supercharger and will redo the gaskets, clean upper and lower throttle bodies. Hopefully it fixes both issues.

CCV hoses get hard with age... The hose has to be attached to the air filter housing and is easily missed upon reassembly.
