What I don't get is that Audi KNOWS what the Benz hp numbers are. Why doesn't someone get a clue and have the designers do a bit more tweaking and have the car put out like 515 hp. Then you would have a car that has bragging rights as more than the Merc.
BMW has been the closest at having a clue with the new 500hp M5, but still they don't get how we think in the states, sad as it is, we love to brag.....gives us hp...suddenly, the Audi monster grill looks a lotttttt better.
Meantime....let um all wonder why it doesn't sell like the Merc.

It looks like ****. Period. Its slow. My E55 will give it a run for its money. Also who the hell wants a bland looking car, looks too similar to the VW Phaeton and A6 IMO. Just like Lexus in the design dept. So sad.

I think you guys are missing the point. The regular A8 is not as fast as say an S500. However, Audi is not interested in being the "fastest". The S8 with its AWD, aluminum structure, powerful V-10 and gorgeous interior is good match for an S55/S63 (not to be compared to an E55 or M5). People sometimes get caught up in who has the most powerful engine. A Z06 Corvette has more power and is faster than an E55...does that make it a better car?
However, I did read in a magazine profiling new cars for the next year that an RS6 would be available with a 550hp V-10. Now that would be more than a match for the E63 or M5. Like I said...it might be more powerful but is it a better car...not sure...we will have to see.

Mercedes all the way!
i know many europeans *seem* to like discreet cars (from what i gather anyway) but i think this is absolutely, rock-bottom, yawn inducing - from the outside at least. i know its quite handsome and all that, but where's the style? it's all so safe and conservative. i duno, perhaps some like it that way. but my guess is the majority of people don't. it'll have a cult following for sure, but how big is the question.
give me a W221 S63AMG any day!

Well, don't most of the Mercs look alot of like too? The only cars that really have their own styling is BMW. Maybe it's because no other car maker has enough ***** (or perhaps they have good brains, whichever way you want to look at it) to be different. Whenever somebody breaks the mold they get criticized. Audi did a great job IMO with all their new models.

It just doesn't look any different than any other A8. The worst part about all Audi's - I have had my share, is that you need to work hard to get them to go fast. Horses under the hood are like beautiful women - you can never have enough - I wish I had more of each every day. Can't wait for the next batch of S and CL AMG's .

The car looks nice especially when you consider the price to be equivalent to a "loaded" S500. I'm guessing the S63 will be minimally $25000 higher than the S8. It certainly won't have the same "bang" as the Benz, but could present very interesting competition. I've also attached a picture of the front grill, suitable for framing.
It the audi sperm whale!!!!
V10 sitting infront of the front axle? ya that car will drive like a slot car!!
Not an audi fan in this case but i do like the RS4 and the old RS6.
These new grills are questionable at best

only audi could come out with a M3 competitor 3 years AFTER the M3's release and STILL BE SLOWER!! Then (according to car and driver) come out with an RS4 thats STILL SLOWER than the E46 M3.
you shouldnt be surprised. Audi is just doing what they know best. following

audi S8
I have owned two Audi S8's and they are nice looking great driving German luxo hot rods especially in rain and snow climates like where I live.
The new S8 is sophisticated techie looking to me and I believe if you drove one especially now with a V-10 and quattro drive you may well think the S8 is better overall car compared to an S series AMG.
With this said... comparing the new S8 to a new E55 I would choose the E55 due to the performance advantage.
With this said I also really like the looks and features of the new 5 and 7 series BMW's so it boils down to what looks and feels best to you.

W12 already has that power ???
Do they want a V10 because Bm has one ?
Alpina do a supercharged V8 in thier B5 and B7 507 bhp 500lb ft torque, I've driven the B7 and the engine is excellent, the V10 in the m5 is nice but IMHO the v8 does it better, reliable, far more torque and better power band, the V10 seems a bit of a novelty choice.

The D2 S8 was base of 72,500 and the new one as most people are chatting about is going to be 105-115k or so thats a HUGE jump. The A8W12 i saw (stickered no price hike) in denver 2 weeks ago for 130k listed.......Think about that. That is out of control IMHO if you dont need quattro its a no brainer. S55 > S8 S600 > A8W12 current and more so on the next gen..This coming from a 3 time owner of 99 A8 01 A8L 02 S8 03S55k. So im not bashing the car its just too damn expensive for what it is.

"One particular highlight that is available as an option is the Advanced Sound System from Bang & Olufsen. The fully digital system from the Danish high-end manufacturer integrates 14 speakers, each energised by its own output stage. The output stages are grouped together in two amplifiers, which supply an output of 1100 Watts if required. The front tweeters use what is known as Acoustic Lens Technology, and act as perfect punctiform sound sources. This sound system represents the state of the art in audio reproduction adding special allure to the sporty, deluxe equipment of the Audi S8."

Is this car a quattro? If so maybe they couldn't up the HP without borrowing from the lamborghini parts bin at an excessive cost?
Either way, you have to appreciate the Audi for what it is. It's still fast, the interior is well built, and its luxury appointments definitely don't dissapoint.
