S65 Press Release (PRNewswire)

Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Global Debut in Detroit Twin-Turbo V12 Powers World's Quickest Four-Door

DETROIT, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Closely following the launch of the
new-generation S-Class sedan, Mercedes-Benz is holding the world debut of the
exclusive new S65 AMG model at the North American International Auto Show in
Detroit, open to the public January 14 - 22, 2006. Joining the V8-powered
S550 model, the S65 AMG features the astonishing power of AMG's six-liter
twin-turbo V12 engine, which makes 604 horsepower for 0-60 mph test track
times of about 4.2 seconds.
AMG is the renowned high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz that
combines its ingenuity and performance tuning expertise with the global
technology resources and car-building expertise of Mercedes-Benz to take
engine, braking and handling performance technology to the highest level.
AMG made subtle enhancements to the S65 AMG body while remaining true to
the car's fundamental design. First, an AMG front apron with large cooling
air intakes and clear-lens fog lamps gives the vehicle a distinctive
appearance. Its dynamic side view is emphasized by AMG side skirts, and an
AMG rear apron is finished off by two sets of AMG chrome twin tailpipes.
Eye-catching 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels complement the car's overall
appearance, marking the first use of original-equipment 20-inch wheels and
tires on a Mercedes-Benz.
The S65 AMG's twin-turbo engine features a number of high-tech
modifications over the standard V12 powerplant, including a longer stroke and
larger bore, and the new model is fitted with a specially modified version of
the Mercedes-Benz five-speed automatic transmission.
To handle the high speed potential of the AMG twin-turbo engine, the front
brakes of the AMG V12 model are equipped with high-performance eight-piston
calipers and compound brake rotors.
Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker to develop active-suspension
technology for production cars, and the S65 AMG sedan is equipped with ABC
active suspension that reduces body roll in cornering, squat under
acceleration, and dive during braking.
The overall design theme of the S-Class interior conveys warmth and
comfort, from its standard full leather upholstery and wood trim to the
sweeping lines of the instrument panel. The front seats in the new S65 AMG
are an entirely new performance design with firmer contours and higher side
bolsters. Standard ventilated seats circulate air through the seat cushion to
reduce perspiration in hot weather.

About AMG
AMG has been a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler since 1999 and is located
near Stuttgart in Affalterbach, Germany. AMG employs 650 specialists in
development, production and administrative areas. AMG develops each of its
models, from the engine and driveline to suspension, brakes, chassis and
aerodynamics.
Each engine is produced and tested at AMG's headquarters in Affalterbach,
and AMG models are assembled at the main Mercedes-Benz vehicle manufacturing
plants.
Spanning all Mercedes-Benz model lines, more than 10,000 AMG models were
sold in the United States in 2005. With over 40 percent of AMG sales, the
U.S. is the top market for AMG worldwide.

On AMG website

Interior has PADDLE shift, instead of buttons, Fab

but exterior is good but could be better

Amazed they have released this so soon and that they use this engine, the w220 S65 was massively over priced in europe, uk was £50k ($75,000) more than the s55 and as a result not many sold.

Wonder how expensive it will be

Here (tax jail) it is supposed to be €280,000,- catalogue price (mind you 45% is tax: 19% VAT and 'car posession tax') = roughly US$330,000.

I guess it'll cost around US$200,000 in the US...

...........well one the mistakes they made with the w220(besides over pricing) is that the S65 was released too late in the life cycle of the W220 chasis. Few wanted to pay such a high price for a car that will become "old" in just one year. So I am not suprised thjat the W221 is being released much earlier. I also notice how they are keeping quiet about the S55 or S63 not to affect the sales of the S65. I think they really want to sell a lot of the W221 S65. I notice that they are using the same engine as in the W220 S65. I think this means that the drastic depreciation in the W220 S65 that I was hoping for may not happen to the extent that I hoped.

I am not so exactly sure that it is exactly the same engine...or transmission. I am going to have to wait for some more details to come (or chase down some more reading) before I won't be sure that they didn't make improvements to both....

As if the W220 S65 didn't have a horrendous enough depreciation, lol.
