First mod of my S55
OK...I know the mod looks like crap (and yes, I know I need to clean up the engine a bit ), but I read about the heat shielding on the E55 forum and decided to do it....especially after feeling the heat of the intake tubes after a long drive. The best part of this mod is that it is cheap from Summitt racing, and that it is velcro and comes off in about 2 seconds. I know it isn't doing much if anything without the filter area done, so I will do that after I get my green filters in the mail.

I noticed after driving the car around, the 2 intake tubes are literally hot to the touch from the engine heat...and I'm no expert, but I know pumping smoking hot air into the intake doesn't help any engine...especially a s/c one. If I see any differences...especially after I finish the airboxes I'll be sure to post my impressions.

Nice, I'm gonna get that done along with the filters. That's as close you'll get to getting a cold air intake for the Benz cars (unless you manage to custom make one, or retrofit).

Haven't had it to the track with the Nasa gear (haha), but I did take them off the other day after a drive and they were smoking hot from the engine, but the intake tubes themselves were quite a bit cooler than the shields. Didn't notice anything seat-of-the-pants performance wise, but it was a fun science project anyway!!!

I would think the best way to do is it leaving a little room between the shield and the tube w/ some small spacers so it wouldn't transfer heat directly to the tube?

Get the IC pump upgrade, run a lower % mix of coolant/water, toss in some water wetter and search for a larger heat exchanger.
If you want to get nuts, get a resevoir to hold some ice water for the track.
