Availability of S63 20" Forged Wheels

As others have indicated. my dealer called back to say that MBUSA will not be importing the Type IV wheels from the Performance Package as a separate part here in the US.

Seems odd though that --

a) the wheels are avail as an a la carte part in Germany already.
b) someone must stock them locally since someone will get into an accident and need to replace a wheel somewhere along the way
c) the wheels show up in the accesory catalog on the AMG website (granted that may be a euro catalog!!)

Shouldn't some enterprising european buy these and sell them on EBAY??

Personally, I'd skip them. They are no wider than the S63 19s, nor do they accomodate wider tires. Thus, there will be little performance benefit from them. The slightly stiffer ride of the 35-series tires versus stock 40-series will come at a cost of slightly increased unsprung weight. Without the other benefit that usually comes from a "+" wheel fitment, bigger contact patch, this is pretty much a wash that will come at a cost of a slightly rougher ride.

The main reason to go to 20s would seem to be cosmetics. The whole S63-030 package seems to be more about "sporty" than performance. It's very disappointing. My guess is that MBUSA isn't importing the wheels to keep them exclusive to the 030 package in order to get top dollar for them.

i am told those forged wheels are 35% lighter, so there may be slight performance benefits but not a big deal. I am torn because i think they are beautiful, but i could live with the 19s for 6 months and am sure these wheels will become avail here closer to y/e

Stock S63 wheels are AMG Style 5. You can see them on the car at

or the closeup on page 39 of the AMG accessories catalog,

ok - those are awful!!! makes me re-think ordering now and maybe waiting until type iv's are available... can't believe what a night and day difference there is between them and how they both make the car look unbelievable - one unbelievably awful and one unbelievably i've got to have it now good... big mistake on mbusa's part imo...

For what its worth, MBUSA emailed me to say that the 19" stock wheels are europe only, and that the S63 will come standard with 20 inch wheels (see attached), but different than the perf package wheels (see attached)

According to my dealer, and the AMG Private Lounge web site, 19" wheels are standard for the S63. One component of the P30 package is 20" wheels. Why would they use standard 20's? There would be much less interest in the P30 package.

According to MB (i can't vouch for the info, just pass it along) the Private Lounge info (and the entire AMG website) are euro specs. They claim the 20" wheels here are standard, but that you ave to order the 030 package if u want the forged wheels. I am suspicious too but who knows.

Those look like the S65 wheels, which indeed comes standard with 20s. I guess they've decided to make brakes, wheels and tires the same for US S63s and S65s.

Have a May build S63; computer claims 030 avail.....but my May build CL63 shows no 030 available.....

Given the poor marketing MB is doing for this 030 pkg (and fact 90% of guys in my region seem to order their cars w/030), who knows what software tweaks to throttle response/susp/shiftpoints/ESP, etc 030 incls.....and whether slightly more robust motors are allocated for 030s.....and what impact ?25lb lighter wheels and bespoke-spec perf tires have on steering/handling feel of 030 cars....

In any case, even if my May builds don't show up w/030, will drive them few mths until my dealer can have 030-spec'd cars built for me.....given tight CL/S63 availability in my region, costs very little to suffer w/a non-030 car while MB sorts out the 030 availability issue....

And for those counting pennies, would suspect, esp in CA, much cheaper and more effective to do a 2 yr lease (where car has all factory-spec equip/options) than any of this dealer-installed tires/wheels nonsense.....in an era of fast-moving hardware/software updates, any tech-intensive, perf-oriented cars become obsolete in 6-12 mos anyway.....

The computer shows my April build S63 has 030 available, and I have ordered the package. If it shows up without it, I will probably pass, and keep driving my E55 until I can get one with it. BTW... The computer also shows I can get Distronic Plus and Night Vision, which are also supposed to be hard to get. Who knows what MBUSA is doing.

As for the Private Lounge being Euro-spec, the announcements of 030 package contents, and a lot of other information differ significantly from the actual European AMG web site.

Just my $.02
