Question for W221 owners

I was at the local dealership today and happened to have gotten my first chance to really study the new S class. My question is does having the shifter on the column make it wierd to drive considering the past W220 was a floor shifter? That and the colum shifter just looked cheap IMO. The only gripe I have about the new body style though.

I (w220 driver) found it very intuitive driving this monster:

Takes about 1 minute to get used to.

I have found it very easy to get used to. Also appreciate the extra space it gives me on the console.

It's different and you have to get used to it but after you do you enjoy the fact that by simply keeping your right arm on the arm rest you control practically the entire car...MB did it right. Think of it as you would your mouse with pull down commands for everything and hardly ever having to touch your key board.

Well I am going to drive one Monday and see for my self. My sales guy said around 2-3 months for a S63 or S65 to my specifications tops, or a week if I am willing to take what another dealer might have on their lot. Kind of sucks they don't have either in stock but he did offer a drive in another customers S65 if I like the regular W221.

I would put a flame thrower to the dealership that let some person (nothing personal) drive my car to see if he likes it. I ordered my car sight unseen and drove it when it for the first time after I paid for it. You either like the car or you don't. Driving it doesn't do anything for me until I own it. Then it's mine. Driving a S550 wouldn't give you a slight look into what it feels to drive an
S65. You might as well go drive go test drive a Camry. The feedback will be about the same, again compared to a S65.

I can see your point. I guess it's different in the south. Dealers know how to keep valued customers happy. And I did like the 550. Not as bad as I thought it would be. But way way way different than the S65 as it took a little over a week to set up a test in it due to conflicting appointments. I gotta give the 65 owner credit. He is a super nice fellow and a good sport allowing this to have happened. Plus he is a true die hard benz fan. He has one of the two SLR's the dealership has sold along with the only SL65 and CL65 and just ordered an E63. I have only been doing business with this dealer for 9 years where he has been doing business with them for 30 plus.

Now I just have to decide if I am going to take the plunge or not..

I myself am not a fan of column shifters and have yet to drive a new S-class with one. I'm sure it feels great and doesn't look as bad as the old-school American cars. I can't wait to drive one to see the functionality of such a shifter.

It's a little wierd being I was so use to the shifter on the floor and having a more solid feel to it. And like someone stated earlier I would be worried some valet would try and yank it like you do American vehicles and snap the thing off. But the function of it works and is rather easy to master. What I would have loved to have seen was something like you get in the Maserati Quattroporte with the small "T" handle shifter on the console taking care of park, reverse, neutral, and drive only with the nice paddle shifters up on the steering wheel. That would have been really nice of Mercedes to have done but they didn't.
