racing fuel

so I got a 10 gallon drum of 110 octane racing fuel and mixed it in w about a quarter tank of 91 (highest we can get at the pump in so cal). OMG, the engine sounds MUCH beefier and the extra kick is noticeable for sure. I may order a pump for my garage

It's easier just to pump 100, available at a number of stations in California. This list is old, but a few I've tried have it, including one near me in San Jose and a couple I used in Southern California. It's not cheap but it does make a difference in the S65.

cool thanks. a friend brought the drum to me at my house and gave it as a gift. Seemed pretty easy since i just popped it open and funneled it directly into the tank.

I'm curious if the W221 AMG ECUs adapt faster than the previous cars'? I know on all of the 55k cars, people found the difference negligible or found it took a few cycles of gas (or an ECU reflash) for the car to notice the octane difference at all. How long did it take your care to 'wake up'?
I've been in touch with my dealer, S63 is on its way!

the engine seemed louder last night right after i put it in (at least it seems like it) and then today after driving about 20 miles i noticed what I felt as an increase in torque. this stuff is 110 not 100 so that may have something to do with it too. I did have an ecu upgrade done at about 1k miles and now have about 3k miles on the car.

Just dont let it sit in the tank too long. Flush it out with alot of fresh gas or you will have some problems

Thanks for the link... Noticed a station right near my home.

Any downside to the Sunoco 100? Should it be mixed w/ 93/94 octane? Or could we run a a full tank of 100?

thanks eddie. i used the earlier link posted to find a station a few miles away in Pasadena and took wifey out to dinner at houston's just so I could cruise by the 76 around the corner

is it bad to leave this in my tank?? i topped off with about 8 gallons on top of the 10 gallons of 110 i already had in there. now i'm a little worried.....

Guys - I have no experience with it, but a friend whos on Porsche boards (has a 997 TT) says not really - also says on their boards it's kinds up in the air as to the effect. There may be a placebo effect but who knows. There is none near me in NY, but in Conneticut there are I think next week I'll get some and see. Is it a lot more $$. I'm paying $3.65 for premium (93 octane).

If it sits too long it turns into sort of a gel like residue that sticks on the walls of the intake and can clog things up. At least thats how it is in drag cars.

This is interesting, because higher octane gas should provide little or no difference in an NA car. (In fact, you shouldn't see ANY gains unless your ECU is tuned to take advantage of it.)

Your ECU can't "taste" the gas, you have to tell it that its there.

Higher octane fuel should only benefit F/I cars running on cali's crappy gas, and only in that case if they're tuned to work with it.

Just make sure the 110 OCT is unleaded...you will toast your cats otherwise.

Most 110 high octance race gas I've seen is leaded.

Warning - Running Hogh Octance Gas!!

Hey Guys,

I ran 99 ION Unleaded + 110 top up of racing fuel in my 2004 CLK 55 AMG Cabriolet about a year ago.

I ran it in the car every week to be honest for a month, and the performance difference was amazing, didnt need any ECU mods, its revved a lot faster and actually revved futher into the rev limiter than before !! Its made a real difference, its all because the higher octane level the better it burns, hence increase in performance !!

**BUT THE BAD NEWS** After a month in my car , things went quite bad, after really giving it some stick, racing a rolls royce phantom of all things at 5am in the morning, i did leave the guy right the way to 155mph (it was 5 am) all of a sudden the car had a power loss, didnt cut out, but the ECU kicked in the safety mode, which takes a lot of power away, rev's etc, to prevent overheating & damage etc.

Then it carried on doing it all the time (same symptons as a IC pump malfunction).

It turned out this higher octance gas i used, really damages the engine's inner's, as the car's really are not built for it. It does a lot of damage!!

I only had the car 3 month's, the warranty didnt cover the repairs cos they found out the fuel was the problem, I had a £10k bill !! A lot of labour mind you. I promptly sold this vehicle.

It effects, ECU, Plugs, Coils, exhaust catalyst converter, plus the engine needed a complete flush !

Bad news, dont do it !!

I bought some MotorSport 109(101 motor octane rating) earlier today(8.25/gallon) and put in 5 gallons of it in the tank. I had about 1/8th left over. The difference....WOW. Its like night and day. I have to literally take it easy on the throttle or else tire spin. The brand I got is from VPracing.com. It is UNLEADED and seems to be pretty harmful.

update one tank later

so far so good. one tank of mixed 110/101/91 octane and she has been running amazing and quicker for certain. i raced what looked like an 08 S65 (dealer plates and looked brand new) and remained within what i would consider a respectable trailing distance. My service advisor told me not to run the 110 often tho and not to use much if i do. he also said if i mix half a tank of 101 with half a tank of 91 that i would be fine.

also does anyone else have a big 98 on the inside of there gas lid? I assume this means the car was meant to run on 98 octane which i also assume is the average octane level in europe. can anyone enlighten me here?

YES, the 63 AMG engine should be run on 98 octane fuel.

Most petrol cars are built for 95 octane fuel, which is mostly used in Europe.

However, "special" engines require 98 octane fuel.

great if this is true then i should have no problem running on a mixture of 91 and 101 from the pump, would everyone agree? i truly noticed a big difference when running on the higher octane.

Yep , this will really keep your car humming along!!

Do not be afraid to simply put a full tank of 100 in when possible..Mixing is great but the 100 octane I run makes a HUGE difference I would say 3mph through the 1/4 and the engine sounds crispier

That's weird. That would be a European sticker. European 98 octane is the same as 93 in the US. But because the highest octane available in 50 states is 91 (96 European), no US Mercedes calls for more than 91.

It sounds like they forgot to switch your sticker to the US version.

All US 63's call for 93 and 93 is available in many States, just none in CA.

I wish it was a mistake but it seems the 63 ECU screams for a 93, it smooths out shifting and gives the car some real nice top end. I have 11000 miles now and there is definately a performance difference between 91 and 100. There are a few stations with 100 at the pump, course it is 8.50/gallon. Mixing requires appx 5-6 gallons of 100 and fill the tank completely with 91. I reently filled up with 100 and went a few hundred miles, car at idle and everywhere through the tach was smoother. I even got the car to shift out of first @ 7000 rpm.
