Both S55 and S600 are rated at 4.6 sec from 0-60mph, while SL55 is rated at 4.5. In a recent test at German mag AMS, S600 accelerated from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.5 sec. So expect to see both these S-es approach 4.4 or even 4.3 sec. on American mags

Opinion will divide us on whether the S55 or S600 is better and the same for the CL55/CL600 and SL55/SL600 (when it arrives next year).
UK magazine Autocar has recently tested both the S55 and the S600. They were very impressed by the S600, less so by the S55.
The performance was the same but the tidal wave character and greater torque of the S600 suited the size, weight and style of the S better. By comparison, the ride in the S55 suffered from the AMG treatment and they thought the car compromised, trying too hard to be a sports car.
The message is clear, if you want the highest performing luxury sedan, S600. If you want a super-fast sedan with a more sporting edge, E55 AMG, a real M5 eater. It will be interesting to see how comparisons for the CL and SL top of the line models turn out.
What we can be certain of is people working late in the night in Munich on the next M5. BMW are not going to roll over and say, "that's us beat, then"

Which issue of Autocar made this comparison? I would like to find a copy of this magazine. If not, can anyone scan the pages and post them here? I would appreciate it a lot.
I heard that Mercedes Enthusiast made a similar comparo with the CLs, but I am not sure as I have not yet read it.

I agree the AMG is not ideal for track work, far too heavy and it's much too valuable to do more than a few laps of the Nurburgring. If I still did track work, I'd choose something lighter and rawer, like an old air-cooled Carrera RS. That may not be as fast as modern stuff, but it's still quick enough to get you into a lot of trouble.
Autocar 22 October reviewed the S55 and made reference to the previous S600 review, about a month back. They prefer the S600, not because the S55 is bad but because the S600 is so unexpectedly good. I have scanned files of both reviews but too big to post here and remain legible. If you want to send me a PM with an email address, I'll send it to you.
Reviews of previous 600 models in the UK have always been lukewarm (and I have a 129 SL600), describing them as "over the top". The paper figures of the old SL600 were not much better than the SL500 even if the driving experience was, so inevitably, people asked the question why? With the updated S600, there's clear sky between the S500 and S600 and the S600 no longer needs to justify itself. It's just the top of the tree.
Mercedes Enthusiast features articles written by Ian Kuah who is a knowledgeable (bordering on the geek-ish) reviewer. He's recently compared the two engines back to back and prefers the AMG engine because of its more sporting nature. It's clear though that the V12 TT engine provides all the performance with less of the drama. It's great to have the choice.
The arrival of the V12 TT is a spin off of the Maybach which I think is a pretty pointless exercise unless you are so rich and indolent that you have someone to drive for you. It's only there IMHO to rival the forthcoming BMW sourced Rolls Royce. But, it necessitated the engineering of the new engine which, for economic reasons is being made available lower down the food chain which is good news for the S, CL and SL.
Oh dear, my rambling posts have spilled out of the SL55 forum....sorry guys.
