08 S63 Winter Tires

Thinking about buying some 19s with winter tires.
Any suggestions?
Is the bolt pattern the same as the other 08Ss?

Yes, call the Tire Rack and get a set of AMGs with some Pilot Alpins or Pirelli wintersports. Enjoy!

Tire Rack is exiting the AMG wheel business and additionally does not offer any size other than the original equipment 20". You may want to see the CL AMG forum for a recent discussion.

I will be running the sport package 19" AMG Rims from CL550/S550 this winter on my CL63. The rims clear the breaks on our cars, I verified this earlier. Will be using Bridgestone Blizzak lm22 (255/40/19) snow tire. Same size all around. Installing them this weekend.

Is it even worthwhile to put snow tires on a 63? This is my first winter in a 63. But I've owned a few 7 Series ('01, '02 & '04) and only the '01 could do anything safely in the snow & hills of western PA.

19" will fit. The dealer in K.C. put some on a guys S63 after he kept hitting the curbs (and he put extra fog lights in the front and rear, mounted a huge CB on the rear console blocking the rear air vents, Mud Flap (yes - mud flaps from Wal-Mart because benz does not make a set for the AMG), roof rack and he never cleans it out. It always has trash in it............)

Anyway, back to winter tires. I have Perelli Scorpions on the wifes 2006 ML350 and it drives wonderfully in the winter.

I drive the F-150 4x4 in the winter and garage the S63 in foul weather.

Have a colleague in NYC suburbs (less snowy and hilly in suburban CT vs Pittsburgh) who recently struggled w/this decision re: his CL63.....

Not clear that CL63 (or any AMG) will be optimal on winter tires/wheels in context of high-tq and RWD....and need to deal w/costs/wasted time/hassles of buying/installing those girlie winter tires/wheels....and storing summer perf tires/wheels....

His decision: mothballed his AMG for 5mos/yr when temps are <45F (latest-tech perf tires are not safely useable even when dry and <45F).....and leased a new "beater" S550 4Matic (delivered w/all-season tires) for use during the 5mos/yr when AMGs don't work effectively in NYC....

Another unknown is whether even S550 4Matic on all-season tires is sufficiently effective, as opposed to winter tires/wheels.....perhaps all-season tires 4Matic works OK in the relatively mild winters of NYC....not so sure about harder-core regions like Chicago.....

Net, net, any solution makes costs of ownership/per-use costs of AMGs signif higher for those who don't live in regions where perf tires are useable 365d/yr.....but housing/land costs (and state inc taxes) are often signif cheaper outside CA, right??

My thinking and practice exactly. That's why I picked up an '08 M-class about a month ago. (I did the same thing w/ the previous 7-series cars - bought X5's in a two-fer.)

The hills in Pittsburgh make using a RWD car w/ hi-perf tires in winter impossible. Putting snow tires on a 63 in my area seems basically a waste of time.

So (despite our low cost-of-living here! ), getting a 63 in this terrain/climate requires spending for another vehicle in winter.

On the upside, the twisties are sure fun to run in good weather!~

Your approach makes a lot of sense

Indeed, interesting twisties are the upside for being amongst hills/mtns....am an addict for the CA twisties....

My condolences to our fellow car nuts in places like Chicago (otherwise one of my favorite cities in world) who can only look fwd to 7mos/yr of AMG weather....but face the same ever-flat, ever-straight, intensely boring roads even during those 7mos/yr of AMG weather....

My winter solution is my old E-class with snow tires. I accidently got caught in the snow..about 0.5 inches after dinner with my wife last weekend in my S63. I had my attorney draft a will on Monday morning.......

snow tires

It's why I got the Audi s8 ovet the s63, eliminates the need for a second winter car and has all the enjoyment in dry conditions as well.

The S8 is great until you're next to an S63 at a stop light or you try to figure out why a car for 40K less than the S63 leases for the same.

s8 vs s63

sure the s63 is quicker at a stop light but if you have room for 2 cars would you rather have the s8 to use all yr and in the winter and have room for a second car being a 997 turbo or an exotoc,, or have an s63 and then a winter car. I only have room for 2 because parking space is tight and decided to have the s8 as my winter car which is clearly more fun to drive than an suv and use my other space for a porsche 997 turbo.(soon to be replaced by a gt3rs )

My "argument" for a "winter" type tire for the 63's is not that most of the 63 buyers don't have other vehicles to drive in inclement weather. I would guess that the majority of CL/S63 owners do have alternative transportation and the "all season" tires are primarily used for marginal weather days or the occasional caught-at-the-office snow. Additionally, most of us are relatively hard drivers and even in a few years of ownership we will go through several sets of tires, so if we can enhance our traction during a few winters, all the better!

s63/s8

After test drving the s63 y'day I see what you guys mean. Think I am going to trade the s8 for the s3 this week. Now I need to deal with the same snow tire issues!
