Future is V8..

Over on the w211 forum.. The future does appear V8 going forwards in the S-Class as well... (Love those HP/Torque numbers though)

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/241517-amg-s-secret-war-chest-car-uk.html

No mention of any new V12... It still appears to me that the current M275 V12 is the last of its kind... So enjoy!

Tend to be suspicious of accuracy of this article, which also claims SL65 Blk is a Turbo V8....AMG already revealed SL Blk is a modified 65 motor w/old 5-sp autobox

And the language around the 700hp/885lb-ft motor is sloppily constructed...it could indicate a replacement V12 motor for 65....

BTW, was pleased to see P recently announcing its upgraded CayenneTTS, indicating demand for new, power-upgraded, gas-guzzling, 5000lb+ cars/SUVs (w/$10K optional PCCBs) is rather robust in emerging mkts....and I suspect also in CA...the land of world's cheapest cars/leases and cheap fuel

Suspect there will be continued robust demand for new-tech V12s in CA and various 3rdWorld mkts (and/or at their London/MonteCarlo wkend houses)....and AMG needs to figure out how to avoid VW-Bentley grabbing more mkt share (than it already has) in the high-profit-margin mkt for $200K 12 cyl commuter cars

+1

Good post. Must say that Car Magazine is riddled with inaccuracies and doesn't stand up against the other English contenders, Autocar and Evo.

I am with Chris on this one. I calculated when I recently purchased my '07 CL600 that we are now very near the Biturbo V12 mountain top and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to experience that exquisite torque 'rush' in what is left of my motoring lifetime (I am 57). Just in case this is 'it', I got a MB extended warranty, which covers me fully on this superb CL600 until July of 2014 and/or 100,000 miles! Time will tell if there will be another MB V12, but the current one is incredibly nice...and it can also be rather easily 'improved' via the ECU. I think some of you should take a look at some of the bargains out there, especially on used '07 S & CL 600 in the marketplace. Z356

The SL65 Turbo may just be a typo.... Circumstantially this article does align with previous comments from AMG spokespersons about 2 TT V8's in development code named Hammer 1 + 2. If there is a new V12 in advanced development seems we would have heard at least one credible rumor (from an industry source) about it by now... Kacher despite transferred's opinion does have good contacts in the German Automobile industry...

Don't deny there is a continuing demand for V12 cars... just that the current unit seems to hit all the bases on the hp/torque front and as the upcoming SL65 Blk demonstrates still has untapped potential to be exploited... Committing to an expensive new V12 architecture in the near/medium term still appears technically and economically unnecessary... (And note there are no new rumors of any new V12 for the next gen 7-Series either - all the news is about BMW's new V8 TT... If there is a new 760 it would not surprise me if they stuck with the old V12 also)

I am actually in Stuttgart next week.... Have to get my spy kit out...

Hi Z356,

I am soon going to purchase an extended warranty also. Did you pay the full $4,800 for 7 years/100,000 miles total or did you get a deal?

Am def hedging self as well....getting SL63 030 in May to keep me entertained until I get '09 CL65 in ?Aug....need to get a tq fix; my last 65 was an '07 SL65 back in Summ06....

My sense is much angst exists in Germany/London over this eco-BS....so topic of new-tech V12s is delicate and various "leaks" in EU/UK press have been riddled w/typos/inaccuracies/logical inconsistencies....they don't hand out journalist jobs to just anyone...

Remain optimistic re: near-future new-tech AMG V12s....know enough eco-pious clowns in Woodside/PaloAlto who drive Prius, yet are flown down to their BH wkend houses in an eco-friendly G550....I prefer the honesty of the guys who drive their 65s to the private air terminal....thankfully, our Arab/Russian/Chindian pals tend to consume large private planes/multiple houses/V12 commuter cars in such a logically consistent, philosophically honest way....hopefully, potential profits supersede domestic eco-rhetoric in Germany

Look fwd to any insights you gain during your visit to Germany, cjf

Z356, gotta stop this last of "motoring lifetime" nonsense...you're a fairly young guy....one's only as old as one's spirit...have a 60+yo colleague and good friend in BH who's always mocking 600s as "codgermobiles" for 75+yo BH guys who depend upon drivers to get around Westside...and he only drives S65s or CL63 030s...

Am a bit younger than most repeat, new AMG CL buyers, but have thoroughly enjoyed dozens of new AMGs over past 10yrs....yet I still am eagerly tracking the arrival of my SL63 030 next mth...and look fwd to exploring its various tech/dynamic nuances....

Have several colleagues in their 30s and 40s who have owned many more new AMGs and Ferraris than I have...many of them are fairly jaded upon arrival of any new AMG/F....to me, that's their loss.....am still the kid in the proverbial candy store when my new AMGs arrive....these latest alpha-dog AMG/600s are all amazing cars...and I look fwd to all the interesting new tech advances to come...and exploring real-world dynamic relevance....

OK, I feel young again...

I hope you are right, WSH. I am here visiting in San Luis Obispo (Central Coast of California) taking part in our annual Porsche 356 Club North-South Meet and, at 57, I am one of the youngest guys in attendance. I am gradually getting out of 356s (I sold my original paint, original interior, original top, 39K mile, preservation class concours 356 C Cabriolet last year) and getting into early 911s in similar, unrestored condition. In this 911 long-nose (front hood) crowd, I will not be the youngest, I can assure you. I recently purchased an original paint / original interior Signal Yellow 1973 911T Sunroof Coupe with 63K miles, which is the car & COLOR I dreamt about when I was in college at the University of Pennsylvania back in '68-'72. It is one of the coolest colors for a 911 in the planet! And just in the past few weeks, I also bought a very unique, specially ordered Crystal Blau paint 1970 911E Targa with 53K miles (original paint & original full leather interior), also a very rare find. Both of these cars are in unrestored, street concours condition. Porsches have been my primary hobby all of my adult life and I am particularly well connected to this early Porsche scene. But I don't limit myself to Porsches. I own a 1953 Fiat Topolino (17 HP) and I almost bought just last week a 1960 Mercedes 220SE Ponton (two door) Coupe. The latter had been repainted once and had mostly its original factory red leather interior. What a beautiful car that is! Unfortunately, that deal did not go through. But I am still looking for an early Ponton from that period, if anyone here knows of one at a good price. And, of course, I am also enjoying my codgerly '07 CL600 and keeping those massage seats working all the time. So all is well and I am blessed by my good fortune.

Chris, I did get a deal on the extended warranty (3 additional years and up to 100K miles) when I purchased my leftover '07 CL600 from the dealer. It was a special case since the car had never been titled but used for some 8500 miles by the CEO of the dealership group (Mercedes & other brands) from which I bought it from. There is about a $900+ profit for the dealer on the sale of this factory 3 year/100K extended warranty (retails for $4800), so try to work something out with the selling dealer you bought your car from in the Bay Area. Z356: you, cjf, trumpet and whoover are the guys who keep me feeling guilty about driving an underpowered CL63 030

Always admire the passion displayed by enthusiastic 600/65 owners re: the tq deliv of these marvelous cars....and guys who are so passionate about 600/65's interesting combination of brute strength, yet refined delivery and driving dynamics are fairly young guys in my view....

Hopefully, will be able to back w/the V12 crowd in Aug....it is almost criminal to not be driving an MB/AMG V12 on the legendary 280 fwy....

I am not the only one speculating about no new MB/AMG V12's...

http://www.motorauthority.com/cars/m...v12/#more-5590

To be convinced of the fuel "economy" of new TT V8's though...
