Has any one looked into one of the insanely cheap S65s?

I was playing around on autotrader today, and noticed that some of the 06 S65s have dropped into the 50-70k range while some are still around the 100k range. Has anyone looked into a cheap S65? Have they been beat to hell and thats why they are so cheap? loosing 130k in 2 years is amazing to say the least... If they are legit cars, i would imagine that this would be the best deal in the auto market today

Keep in mind that MB announced the W221 immediately after releasing the W220 S65. This caused them to take a huge hit while still in the pipeline. I paid $110K for a brand new one in 2006. Dealers really got screwed by the factory and its moronic product marketing.

So it's not surprising that these cars will be cheap on the used market. They were great values for smart buyers when new and continue to be when used. Just exercise reasonable care and make sure you have warranty coverage.

I wouldn't be surprise to see an S65 06's in that price range. Once my lease is up on the E350, I would probably purchase one of these V12 machines and as Whoover says ( get the warranty coverage)

Yes we bought a 16K 2006 S65(old body style) it needed a new solenoid valve for the charge-air/intercoolers and a few other things - like oil, filter, service, now a defective rear wheel with an inside rim edge crack keeps losing air pressure, apparantly the 4700lb+ curb weight is too much for the fragile Modular AMG 19" rims. TPMs kick on indicating loss of pressure - had one defective front TPM sensor. Dealers won't admit they have seen more cracked rims - Mercedes hides issues- unlike Ferrari who found a minor defect on wheels 1997-2002 550 Maranello Coupe' they replaced ALL four wheels on ALL the cars - no questions asked!!!!

After about a month of shopping and net searching I just bought my first MB last week- an '06 Flint Gray S65 with 32k miles. The car is virtually perfect....there's not one scratch on the car and only 2 very minor rock chips....the interior is perfect. The dealer had it listed for 82k, I walked out with it for 64.5k. You can find the higher mileage 65's relatively easy for under 60k, but then the warranty becomes an issue. It's absolutely the best deal in the auto market today, IMO. It's the best money I've ever spent on a car thus far

Yours too??? My CL65's right rear rim has a hairline crack. Maybe we should bubble this up to other owners and see if it is just a few with bad luck...or truly a defective design by AMG.

Have had the 19" 2-Piece AMG wheels on for a while on both of my W220's and see no problems so far?

How many miles before you guys noticed the cracks?

Great job!

So I guess the prices dealers are asking on autotrader (or in general, are advertising) are anything but carved in stone..

At an advertised priced price of 82K, you got a CPO, right?

Wow! $110K for a new one in 2006. Just one year before that in February of 2005, I saw one in SanFrancisco for $220K when they just first came out. I would still be in debt on that car for what you paid for the new one even now if I had placed a 5 or 6 year loan on it.

You and the others that have already purchased newer previously owned S55's & S65's are fortunate indeed. I have been considering (make that wishful thinking) a S55 for quite some time now on and off, and there are none on the left coast to be found, private party, dealer, CPO, or otherwise. Actually, I think that all for sale are on the right coast, and there aren't a heck of a lot of those. I also would like a change from the corvettes. I had never really considered a S65 until i saw your post and you being able to pick up 1 with only 32K miles for $65K. I can't even find one out here to look at, let alone consider. Yours is truly a beautiful car and color, and I also like to see some pics of the interior. I was just on the wire this weekend for a new C6 Z06 and decided that it really wasn't exactly what I wanted. You guys are fortunate indeed. Consider yourselves very lucky.

With spending that kind of money brand new, you're better off with a Ferrari. Yeah, you can't drive it everyday, but hey it holds value and IMO nothing comes close to a Ferrari even if the 65 or Porsche TT can smoke it because to 7/10 people a CL500 with AMG package is not really any different than a CL65 (just different rims and four tips instead of two) and a Porsche 911 isn't really any different than a 911 Turbo, just a body kit and some painted brakes. But a Ferrari is a Ferrari, no matter if its a 348, 456m, 360, 430, 550, 612. If I had the chance I'd sell my E320, CL500, Yukon XL Denali (can't sell the C230 cause it's a lease and it's so cheap) replace them with used corollas or civics or sentras and have one ferrari (like a 456m or a 360). Who knows, this has gotten me really thinking...

A Porsche Turbo holds better than the 65's but still, those depreciate a lot as well. Relatively speaking of Porsche Turbo's and 65's, their lower end counterparts, the base 911 and CL500 hold value better because there is less room to lose value. Also, it's because Mercedes and Porsche have a wide spectrum: C300 to CL65 and Boxster to 911 GT2. That kills the values.

Thanks for the compliment Gary- I'm a Corvette lover (having owned 3 of them) but can tell you there is no comparison between a C5/C6 and an S65. Two totally different cars, but the 65 wins in every category for the things that I care about....comfort (I'm 6'7"), reliability, it's affordable (I had ~75k into my Vette that I never drove and was scared everytime I romped on it that something was going to break).....it's quiet and not such an attention getter, it's arguably the safest sedan in the world and it halls a$$......all under factory warranty.

I got tired of wrenching on weekends, making repeated drives to my local tuner, breaking parts, spending $$ like it was going out of style trying to make it "reliable"......the 65 was just what I needed. I have a sh*t eating grin on my face everytime I hammer this car.....which is daily......one more thing my C6 could never tolerate.

As far as the interior pics are concerned, I don't have any.....but they're all the same. Pull up one on the MBUSA sight and check it out. Mine is black and was sold to me in flawless condition. I was a bit nervous the other day when I had my Border Collie riding shotgun with the windows down. When was the last time you saw a canine in a 65 ......I got a few "looks" if you will. Yes, I had triple layers of towels and sheets over the interior

I also am a glutton for punishment. Been into high performance cars & motorcycles all of my adult life. I am on my 5th turbobuick & was getting ready to go on my 3rd vette when I started thinking about a S55 or a S65. Turbobricks I will never get out of my system, but I do see a change coming regarding the vettes. The current '02 Z06 works well for a dd, but will go when I retire.

It dosnt seem like anything holds its value today. I looked at porsches and a ferrari. The ferrari definetly had the wow factor. I can get in the porsche with a shoehorn hehe but it aint comfortable to drive and in the ferrari the wheel well comes in and takes up the whole left side of the footwell so all the pedals are on the right side this is not comfortable and my head hits the roof. Pull up to a light I would have to bend my head down to the steering wheel to see when it turns green. I am right at home in an S class though.

i agree about not holding value, and w/ this current economy these cars will only get cheaper. i'm VERY happy w/ my 02 S55 349hp and although i continue to look(including drool over the S65), i'm thinking about driving my $18k street value car for another 2-3 yrs and then look for pre-owned S65(i'm still scared of the V12 TT cost of ownership). after all, as long as nothing major breaks, i'm a happy camper

I agree to a certain extent that these cars will get cheaper, but probably not as much as some of the other cars. I am looking for a pristine, extremely low mileage '05-'06 S55 and not having much luck. At least I think that I am looking, we won.t really know until I find one and see how much blood that I have to give to actually own one. There is a very low mileage S65 that I saw on the internet somewhere for $178K or something stupid like that. I am sure that was a museum quality car.
