Heat Exchanger upgrade for S55
How does the heat exchanger on the S55 compare to the E55? It seems to be a good upgrade for the E55 and is recommended, but how does the heat exchanger on the S compare to the E? I am looking for the next upgrade after a pulley and tune.

My next Upgrade
Hi. I am new to this site, as well as to modifying cars. My S55 is having the Kleemann K1 and LSD installed this week. After speaking to several others who have significantly more experience, it was suggested that my next mod be an upgraded IC pump and 80 mm throttle body, which should be done at the same time so as not to duplicate labor charges.

We have 2 already
On an S55 dont waste your money. We have 2 heat exchanger already so one more would be over kill. Get the newer OEM pump or the Johnson pump for an upgrade to the intercooler system.

Thanks. Your sentiments were echoed by Cory at Kleemann. Do you recommend the cm30 or cm90 Johnson pump. I think that I read somewhere that the 90 was too powerful and didn't allow liquid to remain in radiator long enough to cool. Your thoughts?

I have the CM30. The reason is it flows a little better than OEM. The CM90 flow 3 times as much and as you said won't allow the coolant to sit in the heat exchanger. Also the CM90 is a monster of a pump and will take alot of effort to install. I installed my CM30 in about 30mins.

Exhaust on the AMG's are pretty good. Its all depends on the header setup on how far you go with the exhaust.
TB is a strong mod as they now offer a 80mm and 82mm. Also a vendor is working on a larger TB. Tb will help with your top end speed. also look to get 20Whp or so depending on the size TB.
Hope this helps.

I would go pulley , H/E, tune and larger tb. Then see if you want to make your car loud and shake more with headers. I stopped at 11.60 and stock exhaust..

My manual shows that the S and CL have ONE large h/e. The cooler in the lower valance is an oil cooler not water. The H/E is behind the radiator. It is larger than the E but will still take to long to recover from a run , with addition of a pulley. I have hundreds of hours of datalogging and the H/E is a good mod. So is the pulley and larger TB.

The best way to upgrade the intercooler system is to cool the fluid. Even an efficient HE will only keep fliud temps above ambient air temps especially after a wide open blast. The 493/517 03-06 supercharged motor would really wake up with a chiller system. I also have a lightning and here in S.A. with temps at 100 degrees outside my intercooler temps can get as low as 58 degrees. The truck accelerates like its a cool day. I had a 04 S55 but didnt want to lose the warranty so I didnt mod it. I would contact this guy and see what he's willing to do for you S55 owners that are not afraid to mod.

MBWorld Fanatic!
i haven't done any cooling upgrade to my car yet, not even the johnson pump!
will definitely upgrade oem to johnson "soon" but i just wanted to see whether or not the car would hold up to the mods like members have suggested.
right now i only have short-tube headers on my car, but will have 180mm crank pulley as well as tb in the next 2 weeks.
after that powerchip will come by and do a custom dyno tune! i will keep you guys updated with the cooling for my fellow w220's!
