S63 front brakes $3600?

My dealer just recomended that I replace my front rotors and pads. I have about 30k miles on the car. The parts are $3,600, that seems a bit steep. Should I do it or wait till the replace brakes light goes on?

I would get every last penny worth of those! Seriously, are the rotors really below spec? I know they are a grand a piece, but wow!

03 s55 rotors are about 300 each plus 160 for both front akabeno pads. sounds like they are doing all 4 wheels and still too much.

for that price I would wait until the pad backing is grinding the rotor! You might as well wait until they get noisy because they will replace pads, rotors, and sensors anyway. Its not like they turn the rotors and slap new pads on.

While SL55 brake OEM rotors are about $100 each, the 030 package rotors are closer to $1000 each.

I would suspect that the 63 has a similar multi piece rotor. I personally wouldn't wait for the brakes to be grinding. I would rather spend the money and make sure that my car stops when I hit the brake.

it really depends..are you going to do it yourself or let the stealership do it..

if you do it yourself it shouldn't cost much, just parts..(make sure you do it right though)

on my 03 s55..with the big brakes..only cost me 150bucks for akabono pads..
i resurfaced my rotors..

ome pads suck...i would rather go with aftermarket pads..my experience with akabono stop bettter then oem pads..

goodluck...

The price is correct.. I just had a break job on my CL63 28k miles.. The front rotors are $1k/each + break pads + labor sounds about right.

No longer car shopping...
If the rotors aren't worn, why not simply replace the pads NOW....BEFORE the rotors DO need replacing? Seems like the most economical approach. Dealerships are trying to get all the $'s they can out of you but that doesn't mean that you HAVE to go that way. Ask your service adviser why the pads-only approach wouldn't be viable at this point.

DO NOT heed this advice - Then you'll make sure those rotors are done

This is very good advice. Mercedes makes about $1k on every brake job in PARTS ALONE, and this is due mainly to the sale of rotors. Chances are your car does not need rotors because you still have brake pad left, and therefore have not scored the rotors, and can just replace the pads until your actual rotors need to be replaced. If you wait and start scoring the rotors, that is a big safety issue, not to mention you ruin the rotors and then you have to replace them, along with the pads. My advice - When looking for brakes and service, find a local trusted tech, not Mercedes, as they'll tell you to replace the brakes every time you bring the car in, and AMG brakes are not cheap.

I just turned 30k miles and replaced my pads & rotors, last week. The car was in for a "B" service and I was advised that the brakes were at 10%, even though there was no brake warning indicator. Upon replacing the pads, 2 of the inboard 8 pads were at the rivets. The rotors were worn to the extent that there was a substantial (1/4" +/-) lip on the outer edge of the rotors. I think 30,000 miles for this kind of car, and the kind of driver I am, is not too bad. For those of you looking for alternative brakes/rotors etc., forget it as at this point in time MB is the only source.

The $3600usd, which seems high relative to a few quotes I obtained, is for the complete brake job. The few dealers I spoke with quoted the rotors at $1100-$1225 each, pads at $300-$400 per axle, $25 for sensors, a few hundred labor and any other incidentals they throw in should price the complete job just above $3000.

They said the same for my CLK55. Need to replace front break and rotors ($2600).

I took it to another shop that used to work on my Prelude yeeeears ago while i was in collegea. They ordered the parts for me (only pads). They cleaned the rotors (didnt even need resurfacing) put on the new pads I walked away paying $650.

Yet again we see uneducated opinions/suggestions from people that have no idea what they are talking about.

The OP clearly stated that he has an S63 AMG.. which has nothing to do with your 03 S55... so what does it matter how much YOU paid for your rotors?

I think they are twin-sliding calipers, not 12 piston brakes.

no offense, don't feel bad ok, but you got ***-raped..hahahah..

actually they probably got the pads wholesale price $50 at cost..

and you pay $600 labor for 5min job...removing the old pads and slap on new pads..

next time bring it to me, i'll do it for 1/2 price cheaper..Forum hook up price..

$300 bucks only ok..

Curious Ingenere, ever consider offering adaptors to allow standard SL55's to use the 030 rotors?
