Same engine but NOT the same HP or torque. S has better cooling and exhaust flow so higher stock HP and TQ numbers, BUT E weighs 230 lbs less. Get the guy in the E class to let his fat friend sit in the passenger seat and the S will smoke him!

I would like to agree on the Hp and Tq statment but many and I mean many dynos of the E have shown the E having the same HP/Tq as the S/SL/CL. You are right about the cooling and weight.

first time i've heard that

did they dyno an E and and S at the same time (well not exactly the same time ), so that an accurate A-B comparison could be made?

2007 GL450 2003 S55
I drove several E55's before buying my 2003 S55, which was the first S55 I ever drove. For me, an important and overlooked part of the Mercedes AMG experience is luxury and comfort, which is where E loses. As future cars become even faster, both the S55 and E55 will relinquish some of their speed dominance and the performance difference between the two will matter even less. But even 10 years from now the S55 will be very comfortable and roomy when compared to its future peers.

I also feel that the S55's looks will hold up better than those of the E55. The new angular E w212 appears quite different than the rounded w211, whereas I feel the w220 looks more similar to the current w221, especially from head-on. The sleek w220 is basically a w221 on a diet.

Just my thoughts. Thanks.

Allroad? For what it is worth I have driven a couple of Allroads, but I owned an S6 Avant and an S4 Cabriolet. Both bought new. I replaced them with an S65 and an SL600. The Audi's were great cars and would own one again in the right circumstances (snow country.) They are not close to an AMG or V12TT Mercedes.
As for S vs E, I have one of each and they are really quite different to drive. You absolutely must drive each to see which best suits what you are looking for in a car. All these AMG's are expensive to service/repair. Get the best you can find and try for some amount of warranty coverage.

I was really thinking the same thing. However, I do not believe that driving something 'similar' will give me what I want. I obviously can't go to my local MB dealer and say can I test drive an 03,04 E55 or S55 please. HAHA. And I would assume that driving a newer model would definitely not be the same as the older ones. But, I feel that the S is basically what I am going to stick with now I have read all the feedback from you individuals. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! Now the other difficult part is finding the needle in the haystack without breaking myself financially.

When i bought my s-klass.. i didn't have e-class in mind..

my previous car was a 2 door car, i was tired of folding the backseat for passenger....

depend on your style, your taste and stereotype..buy what you like...

there's no comparation between e and s class..they're in diff. class..

s-class cost more and better period..

Actaully my 20's don't slow me down as they are lighter and with the lower profile tires almost exactly the same rolling diameter as the factory 18"s with higher profile tires. Now IF I had the same profile tire and 20's, yes that would actually be detrimental to performance.

BTW, sent you a PM.

Hopefully I will have the opportunity next year. It's been kind of hard to locate an used one with the color combo and options that I would like, especially around the mileage and price I am hoping for. I still have to sell my BMW. Of course I am also considering buying a boat next year. We'll see what comes first. I will frequent the boards more the closer I get to finding something!!

Initial inertia will always be present in a larger diameter rim. It really wouldn't be the speed I would be concerned with but the gas consumption with larger rims!! However, with the tq and hp these vehicles make I highly doubt it will make much if any difference at all.

Fuel mileage? Did you say fuel mielage? We don't need no stinking fuel mileage! The point of these cars is to burn as MUCH fuel as possible at all times!

First, if you are used to BMWs you may or may not realize that while it is assumed that a 3 = C class, 5 = E class, 740 = S class that ain't quite correct. I find the BMWs run a bit smaller across the line. A 5 series is really in between a C and E in size so you may be very happy with an E class room wise.

The E is the sportier of the two without a doubt. But I found it neither fish nor foul. What I mean is it will NOT handle like a BMW and while brutely fast just doesn't have the same chassis sophistication (sorry Mercedes fans but if you've driven an M3 then you know I am right). At the same time the E55 is not a luxury car in terms of noise vibration and harshness. You know you are in muscle car every minute.

The S on the other hand seems to me to be the perfect compromise. Remember that neither will give you the BMWs handling. What most people fail to realize are:

The S55 larger engine bay means from the factory a 493 hp versu 469 hp rating, bigger exhaust and better heat rejection.

The S55 comes with a two part heat exchanger from the factory, no loss of SC boost due to excessive IAT, even after most mods. With an E this becomes an issue almost immediatley after any mod, even a simple pulley / ECU tune.

The S is very quiet and comfortable when in the tame mode but can still burn it up when youfeel like it! Just select the sport tranny and shock settings and smash the gas!

Most overlooked is the weight difference. It ISN'T what you think, just over 200 lbs difference. That's your friend as a passenger! He gets out and you weigh the same as the two passenger E55! You are giving up a lot with an E without much in the way of performance gains.

Also I disagree on price differences expressed above. I found that E55 and S55s tend to be almost exactly the same price used for same year same milage cars.

I'd look for an 04, 03 was the first year for both SC cars and I always stay away from any first year models. I don;t know the specifics but I think Mercedes ided and fixed some things between 03 and 04.

I wouldn;t be scared of higher milage IF you have service records. Like a Porsche, maintenance is everything on these cars. Get therecords or walk away. BTW, a good delear will pull the history on any car up by VIN and if you ask nicely print it out for you. That way you will know everyhting that the car has ever had done to it by any MB delaer.

You do need to make a major decision either way , warranty or naked? If you go without a warranty you can see some hefty repair bills. I just paid almost $2700 for a new ABC pump (common S failure at about 65k miles). However, so far that's been it and I am two years in and would have had to pay about $4300 for a 3 yr 36k mile aftermarket warranty. It's a gamble you have to decide to take or not. BTW, every study I've ever read shows what you would expect, the warranty comapanies make a lot of money meaning most poeple do not have repairs equal to or greater than their warranty cost. That said, these were 95 to 125k cars new and one major repair can run thousands.+

Good hunting!
I would have to agree with Zachmac on the Handling part. I am used to my e38 750il. and even that heavy of a car and being a 98 instead of a 2003 (my S55 amg) it has a feedback and smoothness of response when you steer and hit a corner that I haven't ever felt in a Merc or Infinity or lexus Which is pretty strange thinking this is technology that was first put in the E38 in 94. Once you hit the Throttle in the S55 though you are catipulted into a totally different demension of driving. Having that much power that is encapsulated in a mercedes which still handles good, is verry comfortable, has an imense ammount of amentities, it becomes verry clear why I bought it. buy the S55
