Need Help!! Strange noise from engine while off
Turned off my car tonight, and heard a bizarre sound...like an electric razor...exactly like an electric razor actually, but on steroids. Parked my car 15 minutes ago, and it's still going!! Small amount of smoke coming from engine, and the noise is coming from somewhere just behind the passenger-side headlight. Tried to turn the car back on and then off again, and it did nothing. Slightly worried that my car is going to burst into flames in the middle of the night!!
Anyone have a clue what this is, and if there is anything I can do in the interim since nothing is open at this time of night? S55 2006.
Okay, it shut off after about 25 minutes...no more smoke. I started her up, and didn't get any warning messages or anything. So, it's not a fire hazard for tonight, but I would love to understand what's happening. Let me stress that this was NOT a fan sound in the least. It sounds like a freshly charged electric razor, and quite loud. I appreciate your thoughts.

It sounds to me like a pressure damper for the ABC system. I would check into that, but the noise will come from the area behind the right front wheel under the car.

Thanks Nick. I'll check into it in the morning, and I'll post what I find...might help someone in the future. It could have been by the wheel...kinda tough to pinpoint the spot the noise was coming from. Hopefully it won't cost me a fortune to repair.

Just got back from the MB Service Master tech's...good news! He said the diagnostics showed a fault in an auxiliary pump...don't remember what it was called. It flushes the fuel out through the exhaust for the first couple of minutes when you turn on your car...I know almost nothing about cars, as you can tell. The pump is located just behind and below the front passenger headlight on superchanged S class. I was told this is the same location as the air pump on non-supercharged models. The tech told me that he has owned several AMG's, including S55, and that this just happens every so often. There is nothing to do or replace. The aux. pump shows that it's working fine now. Hope this helps someone in the future.

I'm officially confused by that explanation. The non Kompressor air pump is at the front, upper center of the engine. If the car has rear climate control, I have seen the coolant pump for that system come loose and rub on the inner footwel behind the fender liner.

Again, I know zippy about the inner workings of my car. However, whatever the auxiliary pump or motor is that lies directly behind and just below the passenger headlight...that's what the problem was. The mech. told me that it's different than what's located in that spot for the non superchanged versions of S class. He originally thought it might be the air suspension pump, but wound up being something else. I'll try to get better details and post them. I thought it would make some sense to you folks that know a lot about engines...clearly I didn't do a very good job of explaining things. Sorry 'bout that.

Well, it was too good to be true. The next day my check engine light came on, and $1,057 later, I have a new Air Pump and relay. To boot, there is a pretty stong gasoline smell inside my car, so the dealer now has it to diagnose that problem. I broke my own cardinal rule...never own a MB or BMW out of warranty. I'm afraid I'm going to have to give her up for something new.
