Speeding Tickets and AMG Cars

I am curious as to the correlation between speeding tickets and AMG cars. Given that it is not hard to rocket these cars to triple digit speeds in a few seconds.

Do you find it that you are getting more, less or same number of citations for speeding in your AMG cars vs. other cars?

In my case, on average I get a speeding ticket every 2.5 years, always on a clear, sunny day with moderate traffic on highways. My last one was in July 2010, no radar, no laser, no pacing, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer just assumed I was speeding because I passed a few cars, I felt like the AMG logo on the car instigated it.

Interested in your comments on this topic.

That's funny, I usually only get a ticket in those same conditions you described - sunny day, clear skies, a bit of traffic but not too much.

I've never gotten a ticket when I'm having "fun" with the car, just when I'm just cruising at 80mph and they zap me!

Obviously since AMG's have more power you can go faster in less time, but in my case most of my tickets are for normal cruising at 80 or so, probably get one every 2 years or something like that.

i got singled out on the LIE in NY heading west in suffolk county during rush hour with trucks everywhere cop claimed i was going 80 but i beat the ticket due to officers screw ups on tickets and even beat the tinted window ticket as well . One for the good guys !!!!! but true they never catch u past 100 only when your trying to obey the rules somewhat /.

I have been driving, fast I might add, AMG cars for the last 10 years and have not found them to be ticket magnets at all. I get more attention out of the lack of a front plate more so than anything.

Same - average about 1 every two years - caveat - I drive about 30,000 miles a year - every year. The last ticket I got was in the AMG (on the way to a track day event). It is easy to get into triple digits but getting caught doing that is "go directly to jail" time. Cali may be different but the great thing about AMG's is that they are sleepers so most cops don't pay attention to them. When you do pass, it's almost as if traffic is standing still and I think that what gets us.

motorkas...sweet E55, I like the lower diffuser!

Sound can play a part in getting a ticket, too - AMG's have a great exhaust note when you open it up, but when you are just cruising they are as quiet as any other Mercedes - I think if you drove around in a sports car with loud exhaust that goes crazy at the slightest touch, it can definitely draw more attention from a nearby officer.

i also think sound has a lot to do with it. I've gotten 2 speeding tickets in my Cali GT (which is insanely loud even at 1500 rmps) and zero in either of my AMG's.. even though both AMG's are faster and are driven at higher speeds.

Last ticket was at 100, and I was passing other cars on sunny Monday morning. I stood out bc of the speed, passing other cars. Not bc it was a MB/AMG.

Officer's words to me after I had pulled over and put the keys up on the dash to show I was one of the nice guys, just late for a meeting,
"Hmmm...100+ MPH. Would you like the civil infraction or the criminal?"

Knock on wood...I've been lucky. Rule #1...don't pass too many cars. Usually - that's will draw the attention, not the AMG.
Btw, fast cars with tinted windows...CHPs just LOVE to bust those guys(front windows are not allowed to be hinted in CA).

With most cities, counties and states near or at bankruptcy, the cops are under more pressure to collect your money rather than enforce safety. On a clear sunny day with low to moderate traffic, in a safe and capable car, I wonder what safety is compromised doing 70 MPH instead of posted 65.

+1 to the Valentine, just make sure it's either up in the black section by the mirror or in the one little non-coated area of the window on the pass side in the middle, you can see it off angle from the outside of the car or in the manual. Also, add a M47 laser blinder for real sh*ts and giggles Three units up front (two in the grill, one by the plate) and one in the rear. Legal in most states. For now.

I always drive with my radar detector but it is of little help on California highways since CHP uses pacing as a preferred method (too much traffic to use radar or laser). So you drive with eyes wide open, check behind, slow lane (where they hide behind big trucks), up, down and sideways.

Being a rather experienced speeding ticket receiver, it is obvious that cops have a much higher propensity to issue tickets to higher end cars, they assume the car is capable, driver can afford it, he/she will pay instead of fighting it.

Most people can't tell the difference between AMG and the Mercedes badge, including law enforcement. These days the State Police are driving confiscated vehicles of all types and detection is virtually impossible. In Maryland I have already seen radar mounted on lawn cutting equipment on I-95. If you stick out from the crowd or drive through a camera equipped speed zone, you can expect to get a ticket.

Radar detectors are illegal in Washington DC and Virginia, but not Maryland. However, everything else is illegal in Maryland.

I disagree that law enforcement doesn't know the difference between the AMG's and non AMG's. Let me give you a very recent incident. I was driving my SL55 on a surface street and was behind a slow moving car in the center lane of a 4 lane street. The logical thing to do was pass him on the right. As soon as I passed him I saw a motorcycle officer parked in the bicycle lane and shortly thereafter I saw the red flashing light. Sure enough he pulled me over and informed me that I was going 55 in a35 mile an hour zone. He also said that many people would love to to have "this car with the top down and the hand built engine". Obviously he knew AMG cars. He then walked around the car and asked me if I was aware that my car did not have a front license plate. I replied that I just could not see myself drilling holes in the front bumper. He responded by saying "Neither would I". He then gave me a scolding for speeding but did not give me a ticket. So the moral of the story is they don't all have hard on's for AMG cars and some appear to have a soft spot for them!!!

You were lucky Lou, it appears that you got a car enthusiast of a cop who appreciated a fine car. I agree, most cops are knowledgeable about cars and model years, it is part of their training to distinguish between various cars and models for obvious reasons,

His mama. Traded y0 mama in because she was squeaking.
In the 4 years I've been driving the CL65 platform, I've NEVER had a speeding ticket in those cars.

I don't know about you guys, but I average a speeding ticket once every 3-4 months. When I bought my 600TT I knew that in one year I'll be having trouble hanging on to my license (its been 2 years and I'm barely holding on). I have trouble driving my car on regular streets and stick to highways as much as possible. The car doesn't seem to like anything less than 80mph.

Since I'm mostly a night rider, all of my tickets have come in the middle of the night around 12-1am.

I was about to but laser jammers are illegal in Illinois. I don't know if cops are smart enough to figure out if I have one. It took them over a year and a half to figure out my license plate lens cover.

That's a lot of tickets Reckless, one every 3-4 months is 3-4 tickets a year, must have a good lawyer to keep your license. So, do you think your car attributes to your frequent citations or you would be getting the same number of citations in a lesser car?

The car makes it hard not to speed. The car can catapult to 120 in a heart beat and 0-60 in under 4 seconds. I like the term comfort power - I feel very comfortable going ridiculous speeds in the car, 100mph is like a walk in the park. 120 feels more like 60.
I remember in the first few weeks of getting the car, I accidentally passed a speeding cop car because it didn't feel like I was going anywhere need speed limit (has happened a few times).
