2006 vs 2007 and younger S65
Has anyone ever raced these cars next to each other or have real life experience on the topic? Which car is faster? Think the W220?

....bump!
I have always wanted to get a Mercedes V12 TT. Almost pulled the trigger once. Now the W221 S65 prices have dropped into the 60's. The engine and transmission are the same as the W220 S65. I know most 65 owners probably don't race their car, but I have not seen one single W221 S65 in the 11's in the 1/4. As you know the W220 S65 can do this stock form. Makes me wonder if the W221's are slower. What is the fastest W221 S65 anyone heard of or seen? Thanks.

Off the top of my head, the W220s are certainly a little faster as I believe they weigh about 500lbs less....this is not "owner bias" as I'd certainly give up a tenth or two for the W221s increased luxury and technology...
My advice: W221 may be slower, but it's all relative and you'll still be faster than 99.99% of cars you encounter in the real world and it is the clear better buy if you want a car that still looks "box fresh" yet cost a third of its original price...

That's what I have read as well, that the W220 is faster due to being lighter. The W221 are definitely dropping in price, though..and I figure they will drop even faster after the new S63TT are out there.

.....500lbs is a lot. With same engine and transmission and 500lbs weight gain, the w221 S65 has to be significantly slower than the W220 S65. If acceration does not matter, one can get a W221 S550 and still have all the bells and modern technology. Newer model slower than older model is not good. Same with E55 vs E63. Thinking more now about getting the W220 S65.

Yeah, the weight definitely makes a difference. For a 2007 S65 AMG, I was able to find from Inside Line a quarter mile time of:
1/4-Mile (sec. @ mph): 12.6 @ 115.3
I am having a hard time finding any published times for the 2006 S65 AMG, put on dragtimes.net there are a few entries varying from tuned ones in the mid 11's to what appear to be stock ones in the low 12's. But for sure it will be a few ticks faster than the 2007 due to the weight difference.

My 2006 went 12.2-12.00's at 117.5 to 118.8 on regular street tires and 2.0 60' times. It weighed an exact 5100 lbs with a half a tank a gas and me in it.
It is bone stock down to the air filters.

Flight Test, thanks for the info - that seems about right compared to the 12.6 at 115.3 of the 2007 S65. I guess those extra pounds drop it .4 to .6 on regular tires/stock for stock. That's a pretty big difference! The newer W221 of course has stuff that makes up for it, but I think they should have upped the power of the 2007 or done something to make it perform closer to the 2006.

I have never driven a 2007+ S65 but they sure are much nicer inside than the 2006, of course there is a huge difference in price. For a fast as hell comfy 4 seater the 2006 is hard to beat.
I can't wait to start modding.

Regardless, low-12 second quarter mile for a car weighing 5,000lbs or more is very impressive. Heck, a 2006 S65 is almost the same quarter mile time as a Z06! You'd need a ZR1, newer Porsche 911 Turbo, Nissan GTR, etc - to really beat a 2006 S65 in the quarter mile.
