Front rotor question on a 221 S65?
I picked up a CPO'd (certificate in hand) 221 S65 yesterday....the car has solid front rotors on it??....and it was CPO'd with the same rotors on it. Did AMG ever have non-cross drilled /slotted rotors for the 65? Where could you even find one that size if it wasn't meant for the S65??...what else would they make it for?
Anyway, the car brakes/stops etc perfectly.......it's the "appearance" that's killing me. The rears are cross drilled/slotted so they don't even match the fronts
Any ideas gents? Possible "blanks" that were never drilled?

The S65 front rotors were never cross drilled. They are seriously dimpled to the point that they looked cross drilled.. Let me say that again. The S65/S63 front rotors are dimpled. If the Dimples are gone, it means they are worn to the point that it is time to replace the rotors.
The S65 had rotors/brakes designed by Continental and not the Traditional Brembo.

Many thanks for the reply, but I beg to differ??....this is my second S65, and my third set of front rotors....all of them have been cross drilled. And, if you look at every picture on ebay of the S65's for sale, every one of them are cross drilled.
But...after washing it today I did notice some very, very fine 'dot' marks on the rotors that almost looked like that's where the holes were "supposed" to be. And, to the touch and based on the lip near the outter edge of the rotor they do seem to be fairly worn?? Man, I'm not sure what to think?

Go and look at the official specs on the AMG web site http://www.mercedes-amg.com/#/s65-overview
The official AMG web site clearly states "Composite blind drilled brake discs at the front"
Blind drilled means they are not drilled all the way through . This is done so as to reduce stress fracture. The braking system on the W221 S65 is completely different than on the W220 S65. I believe it's the only AMG model to ever use the continental braking system with twin sliding calipers.
The holes are drilled deep enough that even standing physically next to the car and glancing at them, you would think they are drilled all the way through. It is especially not noticeable in online photographs.
The fact that you are noticing some very fine dots, is indicative of having worn the rotors down past these holes.

I think you're exactly right....that's the case. There's a massive lip on the outter edges as well. Thanks a million for the input....

Busa! Did you ever put rotors on your car? I'm getting ready to go down this road with my S65 and i'm curious if we have any other options out there for a replacement rotor. If anyone knows of a replacement rotor for these cars please chime in. I just called up my local MB dealer and they want $1300 per front rotor. That's just for the rotor and not an installed price.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm looking at a used 2011 CL63, and have a similar situation.
I have attached pictures of the current rotors on the car, which don't seem to be cross-drilled. Does anyone know if the S63/CL63 also had these dimpled rotors? On the first picture there are some circle visible but I'm not sure whether it's just some surface marks or worn-down dimples.
Is is possible that the rotors were replaced with some cheapo aftermarket rotor that wasn't dimpled? Or would only the OEM rotors be compatible with the brake system?
Appreciate the help!
