Newly installed Heat Exchanger in S-Class W220

Here is my new NPI secondary hear exchanger installed today. Mercedes designed the S-class AMG with two heat exchangers in series [because I'm special ]
The primary HE was left in place and the smaller lower HE was replaced with a perfect fit larger secondary similar to what you all have upgraded on your EEEs (I didn't want to be left out). The NPI HE is very light weight. Monitoring air intake indicated lower temps, and faster recovery after revving up. Not able to do a WOT yet, need one more tune this week.

It's rubber mounted and has a rubber strip along the top to protect the hoses that run under the cross frame. No mods required for the plastic bumper but the rubber strip on the under carriage plastic cover needed to be trimmed.

Approx. dimensions are 610 x 180 x 76 mm, the volume is over 5 times and as light weight as the factory OEM Mercedes heat exchanger.
OEM coolant capacity is 295 mL and the new one is 1,570 mL or 1.57 Liters. Quite an improvement in fluid capacity and that matches the approx increase in dimensions. These capacities were measured comparing the internal fluid capacity from both the OEM and the NPI exchangers.

AWESOMENESS!!!! I just went to do mine, but the H/E I got was way to big to fit between the bumper supports. Back to the drawing board for me. Looks great man. Well done, I'm glad to see another W220 modded and being intuitive.

Thanks, What all mods have you done to your S55? Last time I was at the track before some of the recent mods such as larger headers, smaller SC pulley etc I pulled a 12.4@117mph still with traction on, and cold tires. I need one more tune and one more go at the track as I'm done mod'ing I think - LOL Famous last words!

Basically the same mods as you. I don't have the looped rail, or an EC/OE tune. I have a Kleemann tune as far as I know. I bought the car with 90% of the mods in place. Kleemann headers and exhaust, ASP 180 pulley kit, 550cc injectors, 82mm TB, Johnson C/M 30 pump I'm looking into LTH's and then a re-tune and maybe meth injection.

Sounds good. A few observations. The Eurocharged tune by Jerry is a much better tune than the Kleemann tune I had on mine. The fuel rail is kinda required to prevent engine damage. Glad to see you have the 550 cc injectors. Do you know what you have on the dyno?

I figured that the OE or EC tune would be better becasue the kleemann tune is just a box tune. It doesn't account for for some of the upgrades I have. I dyno'd 503 on a mustang dyno. It's in my sig below the pic.

You'll see faster recovery in between pulls, and maybe lower IAT if you have a split system.

I have not heated soaked my car since these cooling mods from NPI while driven hard in Texas heat. Sure temps get up there, but they fall back down very quickly with this NPI HE. I like the high flow capacity, larger volume of water, and super lightweight yet strong construction. Recently ran over a large commercial tire in the road at 80 mph. Busted the front bumper, lost the lower grills, and have hard finn damage to the HE and I was relieved to see that it never split open on me and is structurally still sound. I was for sure expecting to see coolant on the ground.

I know those front covers and grilles are expensive. Good too know the rest of it is okay. I my self just sent a pm to npi (shardul) to see if he can get me a HE for my 04 s55. I need to fix this heat soak issue soon..

Do you know if the NPI HE fits in a 220 S65 with the big tranny cooler underneath? From the pictures it does not look like the S55s have one.

Doesn't the the S65 have twin turbos and thus an intercooler not a HE? If that's what you meant then either way I'm not sure, however since they are both a W220 chassis I would assume the NPI HE would fit or a intercooler of the same dimensions of 610 x 180 x 76 mm

The S65 uses charge air coolers similar to the 55 cars but there are two located on top of the engine instead of a single one under the blower. The front heat exchanger is a little bit different design but a secondary heat exchanger is usually added in the same location as yours.
