W221 S65 turbo leaking
Recently noticed coolant on the garage floor. Took it in to my trusted indy for evaluation....they diagnosed leaks in both turbos...the driver side more so. $4500 for each turbo (part only) plus labor, etc, etc, to remove the engine to get to everything. Total damage somewhere in the $13-15K range. What a lovely Christmas present! Anyone else had issues with these watercooled turbos leaking coolant?
Might be time to give Speeddriven a call.

Since you need new turbos are there any vendors that sell upgraded turbos?
I feel for you man. Uncle had the exact same issue on his Porsche Turbo, total damage was slightly more than what you're looking at.

Why/how would turbos leak coolant? You would think it's just the banjo connections or crush washers? That must mean the turbo bodies are cracked? I've never heard of that.....

I agree. My Indy lets me check out the car when it's on the lift. I would want to see the leak. Can't just start throwing parts at it...that's what going to the dealer is for! Make sure he's seen this engine before; experience is everything.

I got a look at the leaking turbos. The turbos have what looks like a freeze plug on the housing. The leak is coming out of these "freeze plugs". Apparently Mercedes Benz does not offer the freeze plug as a replacement part....not that you could not fabricate one. Still would have to pull the motor to replace them. What a tool job.

It's stories like this that people who even consider owning one of these cars without a warranty need to read.

This is what my turbo water seals looked like after 10 years. The top ones (coolant outlets) were heavily perished, but still weren't leaking. I replaced them with the new red ones. Like divertor valve diaphragms, this isn't something you would do out of choice.
