Question W220 S65 - Fails to start / No Crank / Nothing

Parked my car earlier, got into a little while ago and it will not start.

Keyless go and manual key produce the same results. It cuts the power to most accessories like it usually does right before start but the never cranks.

For some reason ESP, ABS, BAS and Display Defective messages come up on the cluster after trying this 3-5 times.

Cluster reads 11.7V

Took the battery out for about an hour but the results are the same.

I don't have SDS handy to read the codes.

Any ideas?

I am sure you have checked, but have you checked the major engine fuses? I had a similar symptom in a different make of car, and my main engine fuse had blown due to a short on a o2 sensor wire grounding itself out on the chassis. Good luck.

Sounds like an engine CAN issue which can be caused by the M.E. fuse being blown. Check fuse 78 in the r/s dash fuse panel. If thats good then you're going to need an SDS to see what faults you have.

11.8 is low battery voltage.

put it on a battery maintainer and it will likely be ok.

Reed valve clogged? Water under right rear seat in rear Sam? Just an idea to check. ( reed valve is under hood cowling on pass side. Look into it with a flashlight. There should be a hole at the bottom for water to drain. If its clogged with leaves etc water will enter the cabin through the blower motor.

Thanks for the suggestions guys... after some research I found the culprit.

Fuse 87 was blown which prevented the relay from powering up the ECU, ESP and ignition system. I replaced the fuse but it would blow every time I clicked from ACC to ON position. This prevented the car from attempting to crank the motor.

I checked with SDS and the car said it had no communication with the ECU.

I thought the ECU was fried and was causing this so I unplugged it and replaced the fuse, it again was blown out.

I disconnected the voltage regulator/transformer for the coil packs and replaced the fuse and everything worked and the relay clicked on.

Mercedes wanted a $850 for the voltage transformer but I had a new one shipped up for a lot less than that.

I will install it tomorrow and confirm that it was the issue. Thank you for all the suggestions!

Well done oxygen.....thanks for posting. Was curious as to what the issue would be. Let us know if this works.

That was it! Replaced the transformer with a shiny new one and popped in a new 20A #87 fuse and she fired right up!

I have to say the car now starts easier, idles smoother and the power curve is insane. What a ****ing animal! The throttle response also seems to be improved greatly.

I guess that old converter was on it's way out... I wanted to blame the coil packs.

Listen to this exhaust note...

I have heard mechanics mention the transformer needs to be replaced when a coil pack goes bad because it can leave you stranded. I replaced both my coil packs on my S65 (one under warranty) and the dealer replaced the transformer when the coil pack was replaced because MB requires this. That's amazing to me as MB is really tight and usually doesn't replace a part unless its absolutely necessary.

I guess fairly minor is a relative term here... if this happened somewhere public and not in a driveway your chances of a self-diag would be slim and you'd have to get it towed.

If my friend didn't hook me up with the part, this would be $850.00

That's strange I've never heard of this... is this something on Startek that they recommend?

my cousin is a MB tech and he said it was listed to replace the transformer at the same time as a coil pack...not sure if someone told him at MB but all parts have to be approved if it is warranty related.

@Oxyyen, I just paid 850 for the part but have no installed it yet.
My car did not have symptoms like yours. My CEL goes on and I run codes p0304-6 and -p0307-9. Feels like a coil pack problem but it isn't. Car cranks, electronics work but once the motor starts running it dies within 5 seconds. I leave it to rest for 10-15 minutes and the car starts up fine. Happens once a month if I'm lucky. Did you experience this before total lost and zero crank?

Mine would just misfire randomly and then the engine would shut down a bunch of cylinders. Would run fine again after waiting about 180 seconds.

I had one coil go and then the other around two weeks later. Not even a day after that CEL came up for the second coil again. At that time the the second coil and voltage convertor were both replaced and everything has been good since.
