Color of power steering fluid is wrong?

Hello,

I recently purchased a used 2007 S65 with 36,000 miles. The car makes a slight whining noise which seems to be from the power steering. It's the regular power steering type sound although the fluid level is correct. Upon investigation it seem to have red power steering fluid. From what I can gather the two correct products listed in the manual are green looking.

I don't believe there is air in the system, but it is possible. I've lifted the font of the car and turned lock to lock about 30 times while off and while running.

I'm not a pro, but any advice would be helpful. I enjoy working on cars and prefer to do things myself.

If anyone would like to go look or knows the OEM color of power steering fluid in a W221 S65 that would be fantastic.

Pentosin CHF-11S has a light greenish color when new. Like Gatorade lime flavored.

The noise was a pulley. I fixed it and it's silent now.

This is the car which I just purchased. It's in amazing condition.

Looks great! Good thing you replaced that pulley. Mine fell off and left me stranded but it's a common problem. Do your self a favor and replace #8 as well!

I would still check your p s fluid color, I think as others said its probably supposed to be green. If its the wrong fluid its a potential problem, flush and re do.

The amazing thing is this car has been dealer maintained A, B, C, D with even extra services such as break flush and so on.

Take it back to dealers and get them to just confirm it.

It may have been dealer serviced, but someone else (local garage, or previous owner himself) might have changed the power steering fluid for some other reason.

+1, A lot of mercedes fluids are not as compatible as the self serving aftermarket mfgs. suggest.

I may be overly cautious, but just like to be safe. I did visit the dealer initially to investigate the history of the car. I inquired about the power steering color and they didn't seem to have any thoughts other than drop it off and we'll check it out. From the evidence of the records at the dealer it has been clearly maintained, so I chose to figure it out on my own

My current thought is the fluid is old and may have discolored slightly. The car is a 2007.

Here's an image of the fluid color in natural shaded light, no flash.

PS fluid will look clear but to me has a slight clear blue look to it in the can or on a rag.

I may have most those idlers in stock and machined out of bilet with ZZ rated bearings. I replaced all mine on my v8 years ago. I have 2.5" and 3" smooth or ribed billet idlers for most AMG engines.

A few examples.

The dealer will only confirm what they dealers have done, they cannot confirm something that another garage may have done.

As has been said before, the Pentosin is a light shade of green, which turns to a very dark brown, near black colour when it gets old.

Unless theres something new for the W221 AMG cars then id say you have something different in there, not necessarily wrong, but different.

Get it checked for peace of mind if nothing else.

I'm having that same problem with my s63 so it's the 5 pulley that makes the winding noises?
