S55 vs E55
Now I'm not trying to get everyone driving an E55 to get all fired up... but why are the S55s faster than the E55s? Is the gearing or something different? I have raced alot of E55s with my S55 and although sometimes very close I always win. You would think because the S is bigger it would be slower? Obviously I'm not talking about heavily modified cars here. I do have a SC Pulley and tune but I'm sure some of the other cars did too. Just wondering if there is a difference and other drivers have the same results. Again, this is not a challenge to all the E drivers to say where you at lets race...lol

I think the E55 was rated at 469HP while the S55 was 495HP...something different with the exhaust setups possibly...that extra HP may make up for the extra weight...I don't race mine so cant say if it is faster or not.

I drove an 04 S55 with Kleemann pulley, throttle body, headers and tune for a few years and regularly ate tuned E55s for lunch. One, the S55 is higher rated HP and Torque from the factory; the bigger engine bay allows better exhaust flow and much better heat removal. Two, it just ain't that much heavier! More use of aluminium in the S class makes it only about 150 lbs more than an E55.

Oem vs oem, it's in MB's best interest to tune more power out of the S than the E. That way, MB can justify the higher price to its customer. Just look at the current S63 and E63. Both have the exact same engine, but the S is tuned to have way more torque. Same thing with regular E63 vs E63S. The E63S' M157 is tuned to output more. Also the same situation with pre-facelifted vs post-facelifted E63. The latter has been tuned to put out more, despite using the same M157, to compensate for the extra drag from the 4matic to entice customers to buy the new body style.

On a track day last year that saw me getting up to speeds of 175 mph on the straights, i must have drag raced against approx. 6 different E55's. Some were standard, others were 600+ bhp monsters.
But they all had one thing in common . . . . they all lost the first 400-500 yards to my standard, heavy S55.
Now im not sure wether it was the driver (coz im not that good) or wether it was the extra weight helping to keep the power on the road, but i was mighty impressed with my car to say the least.

Now, just to burst your bubble, my current S600 (with tune) will walk all over any S55, including the Kleemann tuned S55 I drove for several years. No substitute for the massive torque of the V12. It's just a whole different animal, like someone took a movie of accelerating in the old S55 and put it on fast forward.
I know this has been debated ad nasuem here (S55 vs S600 / S65) but having owned both you just don't know what you are missing until you drive the V12. The S55 is more visceral but when it comes down to who gets down the road quicker, no contest, V12 rules!

In my three years of S55 versus going on two in the S600 my fuel economy is about .2 MPG better in the S600! However, that means 13.7 around town versus 13.5 so yes, it does drink a lot of fuel. Keep in mind my S55 numbers were for a Kleemann stage 4 tuned car. I've never understood though why anyone who purchases a 500+ HP vehicle even pretends gas consumption is an issue?

I also had the rear cats removed and replaced with an x-pipe, and the middle boxes removed at the same time.
Throwed 550Bhp on the dyno that day.
