I just got the estimate of 8800 fopr front and rear full brake job . I have 47k miles. MBZ dealership having a specula for january they will do it for 5500. I LOVE the car. Butt are these numbers correct, i am still looking around. Wondering if i should have just goth the 2010 S550. well i dint so that say s something . Let me know your thoughts .

Usually I don't bother replacing the brakes until the sensor pops up showing when the rotor is close to the bare bones. The rear rotors tend to last much longer than the fronts if you want to save your self some $$$. Also like Xabo said go to an Indy and buy the rotors yourself. You can find OEM parts online from 20%+ off list price. There's a dealer I use in Kansas that I found recently that gives almost 25% off parts. In your case 825.00 per oem rotor vs the 1100.00 list price

 

$5,000-5,500 seems to be pretty much the standard on the S & CL.

I used it as an opportunity to upgrade my brakes to 2 pc slotted rotors & aluminum hats from Racing Brake. I think between front, rear and pads it came out to around $3,300 or so.

You can save on unsprung weight & I think they look better too (Unless you absolutely must have drilled rotors).

 

In the same boat. What pads did you use with the racing brake rotors? About to order mine but the pads seem to be the issue.

 

I used the standard MB OEM pads with no issues.

 

Planning to do my own brakes when the time comes, as far as my research goes, parts alone are in the neighborhood of $4,100-$4,600 if you want to stick with all OEM parts.

 

What did you get done in the end?

I priced out my '03 parts (3 years ago) for full front ($100 pads and $200 ea rotors) at sub $500. OEM parts.

Is the '08 made of all ceramic rotors? Platinum/diamond alloy? Unicorn horn?

 

65 rotors, P030 and I think 63 are 2 piece 390mm brembo brakes, thus the high price.

 

Well I guess I get more money left over to buy gasoline.

Then again, I also like the phrase, "If you have to ask about the price of the gasoline then you cannot afford this car."

 

Order Ceramic Red Stuff Pads and do your self. They are easier then a typical Chevy or Ford to do. If you only have 47k miles there is no way you need rotors!
Mercedes has BUMPED their head charging that much and will only install semi metallic garbage pads.

On the W221/W216 brakes, it's not uncommon at all to have to replace rotors under 50k. Mine were done around 42k.

 

Mine are at the wear indicators on the front at 26k miles. I'm going to go with Racing Brake or Cryo OEM rotors with EBC redstuff pads to hopefully get some longevity out of the system.

Just for comparison, I purchased front pads, rotors and sensor for $1,902 back in March '13 from a Mercedes dealer for my 2008 S65. One month later I bought rear pads and sensor for $137.10, also from the dealer. No harder to do the work than any other car. Front only takes slightly longer because there are 2x as many pads! Not sure what rear rotors cost but it does show you what dealers get for labor. My rear rotors still good at 91K miles. I assume they will go at next pad replacement.

I am getting ready to do my 2nd replace on my front rotors/pads. Best price I have found for the rotors is about$750/rotor. I have a little time left, but just waiting to see if the prices drop any in the next few months.

I see a potential for Racing Brake to get a few sales if you gave a board member discount. That word travels fast around here.

 

I just paid $9700 for a complete brake job plus a control arm from the dealership so I would think $5500 is a very good deal. The 2010 S550 would have been a fraction of the price, they are much much cheaper to maintain. As they say, AMG = All Money Gone.

 

For that money you can almost get a complete car set of Carbon Ceramic Brakes which will no longer bother you on brake dust, and the brake is supposed to last forever if driving on street, and also will increase the re-sale value.
